Chris Pronger goes from St. Louis to Edmonton for a handful of role players
Eric Brewer is a bit more than a role player, he's a quality defenseman....but he's ain't Chris Pronger and that's a fact. And there's still Scott Niedameyer who needs to find a home (the Oilers were a rumored destination, but I guess they're out of the picture now).
Busy busy time. My question; Habs, Leafs, Sens, and Canucks. Where'd they all drop off to?
EDIT:
The Blues: $19.7 million invested in three players. Something had to give, and this trade made the most sense. I got five bucks that says they DIDN'T shop Weight, shopped the overpaid other guy, and shopped Pronger. This was the deal that made sense (they lose the salary, gain a stable defenseman in return). A smart move by Larry Pleau.
The Oilers: Questions about hs health aside, Pronger (who has had more than a year to recover due to the lockout) will make an impact with his name alone. Kevin Lowe wanted to make a splash, and did he ever. The impact of this will be felt throughout the league, as a perennial seller just bought themselves a bonafide top-tier number one witha bullet defenseman. Who might attract more talent to the Oil City. With ths new CBA, A-N-Y-B-O-D-Y can be a player if they got the space. And the Oilers had the space. The Isbister deal makes so much more sense now (well, it did make a lot of sense before because Isbister is alright, but not great). Pronger will provide steady leadership on and off the ice of a young club who were going to make some noise anyways this year, but now will be that more exciting to watch.
x You know it's funny. As I'm typing about the Pronger/Brewer trade, I go back to sportsnet.ca for spelling. During the TWO MINUTES inbetween then and now, the Pens have signed Sergei Gonchar (a brilliant move). Known for his offensive skills, he's a HUGE addition (Mario + Crosby + Gonchar - red line = GOALS).
Oh yeah, and the Flames have re-signed some kid named Jerome. You may have heard of him.

Apparently some teams like the Leafs and Red Wings and others that had fairly high salaries last year are holding tight as much as possible this year, letting Florida and Nashville make all the big moves with all the cap space, and then next year they'll be the ones with the cap space as their contracts all run out and there'll be more free agents next year because of the CBA than this year.
I'm not sure how the CBA works yet for free agents, but that's what a few guys on Sportsnet and TSN were saying. This is the year for the small market teams because they're starting out with so much room, but the next couple years will swing things back to the teams that are still having to deal with big contracts.

| #8 Posted on 3.8.05 1746.18 Reposted on: 3.8.12 1746.42 | The Oilers have done it again and have "aquired" (ie; stole) Michael Peca from the Islanders. They stole (STOLEN!!) him for Michael York and a conditional draft pick (which as long as it isn't a first rounder, who cares?). So now they have a top level defenseman in Pronger, a great leader argueably one of the best in the NHL in shutting down the top guy on the other team in Peca, plus a solid young team who were already on the verge of something grood. I don't know what Kevin Lowe ate for breakfast the past mornings, but YEEEESH.
Meanwhile, The Habs FINALLY made some moves....and landed Mathieu Dandenault and re-landed Alexei Kovalev. Not bad on both parts. Dandenault is a top four style defenseman (and this pickup will be very much better if we resign Patrice "Brisbro" at lesser money), and the Montreal pressure cooker will keep on hammering Kovalev to play hard. To be honest, I didn't expect the Habs to make much noise, so I'm happy with these two additions. | JayJayDean
