My address is http://www.steviekay.tk courtesy of their service.
There's free service available with them, as well, if you want to see what they're like. | Alessandro

Intriguing, but I'm looking more for the traditional "dot com" name ... For example, I noticed that "the-w.com" was registered using Domains by Proxy; would people recommend going that route?
Also, is it better to sign up with a web hosting company first and have THEM register the domain name for you, or should a person buy the domain name and then look for the web hosting company second?

| #4 Posted on 4.8.05 1119.52 Reposted on: 4.8.12 1124.47 | I usually go through whoever's cheapest, so most of my domains are with GoDaddy. I think Aaron had some deal to get the Domains By Proxy thing so he wouldn't have to display his home address in the zone record, but I've never bothered because I've always had a PO Box I could use as my home base. I STRONGLY encourage you to take care of your domain yourself, just so you don't have to worry (nearly as much) about anybody else being able to mess with it. Any decent hosting company should be able to provide you with DNS upon request without having any stake at all in your domain name, and it will be much easier to get things update should you decide you need to change hosting companies at the drop of a hat. Whenever you've got someone to provide name resolution for you, what *you'll* have to do is update your record to reflect the nameservers of wherever you end up - this is painless and can be done over the web, and usually gets reflected within hours if not minutes.
In the past I've used Network Solutions, register.com, Dotster and GoDaddy - I believe GoDaddy might still have the lowest price of the "big guys" if you can avoid all the frills they try to get you to sign up for, but I haven't actually picked up any NEW domains for a while, so maybe somebody else knows better. | Guru Zim

If you're talking about something like Geocities or Tripod...checkout Atspace (http://www.atspace.com) - no ads, and seemngly unlimited access. The only thing they don't offer is an online HTML editor.
Mr. Boffo and I have the W's WWE Fantasy League listed on Atspace (http://smartass.atspace.com) and my website is actually hosted there (http://steviekay.atspace.com)
I avoid Geocities, Tripod, and 0catch at all costs.

They have a variety of plans ranging from $4.95 to $20,95 depending on what you're looking for. I have small personal site, so I have one of the smaller plans - $5.95 for two main domains, unlimited subdomains, MySQL databases, e-mail addresses, etc. For more money, you can host more domains, get more disk space/bandwidth, etc.
They also give you a discount if their tech support does not respond to e-mails within 24 hours. And yes, they do provide a free web hosting service, but that requires participation in their forums.
Anyway, I'm very happy with the service.

Thier rates vary from $57/yr for a basic acct to $410/yr for a huge account.
I have their "average" account. For $110 I get: http://www.theultimatehosting.com/plans/Average.html 24/7 service. I've had very few outages in the past two years I've been with them and the ones I've had have been solved quickly (usually in less than 10 mins).

more drive space than you'll ever know what to do with (7500 MB) and more bandwidth than you could imagine using (330 GB) and a bunch of other things you can see at their website. If you're gonna pick them or i think most other hosts, they'll register your domain for free when you sign up for hosting. I believe the going rate now is 7.50US$ a month but there is a sign up code you can use (not my referral code, just a group discount or something like that that takes the price down a buck or two/month)
Service is good an quick. They often raise their limits and add new features for free. And downtime is extremely rare.Only 2 downsides: their control panel and stat reporting are pretty weak and I've had some issues with the speed of their MySQL connection. If neither of those things are especially important to you than they're great.
Ask away if you have any questions. and if you do sign up and want to do it through my referal code you just let me know.
