The past...the future

Calgary and Edmonton: Monday is your last day to enjoy A-CHANNEL...becasue it's now history. Sorta.

Effective Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005...the A-CHANNEL stations in Winipeg, Calgary and Edmonton will be repackaged as CityTV.

But wait...there's more!

The Ontario and BC regional stations (The new RO/PL/VR/NX, and VI) will be taking over the A CHANNEL name, sporting a snazzy new logo.

Further information can be found HERE (chumlimited.com). They've launched a new site dedicated to the stations HERE (achannel.ca)

I feel kind of mixed about this; I loved A-CHANNEL in Calgary and Edmonton when I lived there; and while I don't MIND CityTV, for some reason, the entire super slick CityTV look and feel doesn't seem like a good fit in either town. Vancouver? Yes. Toronto? It was born there. But Winnipeg, Calgary or Edmonton? I dunno. I'm guessing that there will be those who will call both stations A-CHANNEL for years to come. Lord knows I will when I head home in October.

I'm equally surprized with the new A-CHANNEL designation for the smaller market stations.

Coupling this with the rebranding of MTV Canada and MTV2 (to Razer and Punchmuch)...it'll be interesting to see what CHUM's next quarterly results look like.

EDIT: added Winnipeg to the list

There have been City-TV Calgary vans around the city, looking much the same as the ones I grew up with in Toronto. I expect some griping about the Toronto media expanding its influence, but not much else.

Hopefully City-TV Calgary will broadcast the same late night soft-core porn I enjoyed on City-TV in Toronto in my teens.

In Winnipeg A-channel is a joke because they use so many high school kids as shooters. They actually get ratings so low for their morning show that it doesn't even qualify as registering as a point, so it comes out as zero. Somehow that's possible.

Everyone here will continue calling it A-channel. And they aren't hiring new staff - it's still the same people working there - so it's the same quality of programming here.

I was curioous to know the same thing, but for some reason, I can't call up calgary TV listings on Yahoo's TV listing service.

I'm wondering if they'll bling up the offices on 7th ave...or at least, get rid of the ugly bright yellow on the outside.

Same goes for the office on Jasper Ave. in Edmonton. Ugh! :-)

No kidding on the first part. I got the time-shift tv package with MTS, so I get different A-channels from across Canada (lucky me) and I can't believe how crappy ours is.

As far as calling it A-channel, a lot of people I talk to still call it MTN (since like with this renaming, the quality and talent is exactly the same, only with a name change)

haha...do people out in Winnipeg still all it Ass-Channel? I heard it's pretty rotten.

I get a kick out of watching local TV stations' morning TV shows, and gauging their production levels...and The A Channel one in Winnipeg was lacking in that department.

I've never heard the Ass-channel name, but you can believe me that from now on that's what I'll be calling it. They look like someone took the tape for the show out to an alley and rubbed the film in the gravel for 10 minutes and then went to air with it. Only they broadcast LIVE with that quality.

I get a kick out of watching other place's morning shows too. I usually try to catch some of CityTV's shows with either Beverley Mahood in Vancouver or Liza Fromer from Toronto. Both as the result of childhood crushes from a while back (especially Liza).

Beverly Mahood...as in "Couple On The Cake with Steve Fox" Bevely Mahood? Duuuuuuuuude! I guess when a career in Canadian Country music fails, there's always TV. See: Beaumont, Stephanie for another example; she was on A-Channel after her career unfortunately fizzled out.

I took a chance to see the New V..er..Barrie's Ass-channel morning show today; and they have NOT impressed me. First off, their bottom and side bars (with news headlines and weather updates) are a very bright blue and detract from the actual screen; and the station logo was too bright.

I'll stick to CH Morning Live on the local CH station here.

=S

Yeah, that's the Beverley Mahood I'm talking about. I also watched A-channel in Edmonton for Stephanie's Wired show until she moved to the New VI or something in Vancouver.

Winnipeg's CityTV is exactly the same except my tv says "CityTV" when I tune to it. I don't think that'll be enough to convince people that it doesn't suck anymore.

That's really interesting; I took a gander at the City-TV Vancouver site, and couldn't find anything about her. No offence to Beverly, but as long as she's employed OFF RADIO, I'm happy. Her stuff with LACE was totally gross.

I'll have to look into Stephanie Beaumont's show, though. I really miss her music.

I'm wondering if there are any major changes to the stations staffing since the name changes....or if the new station newsroom sets look like the Toronto site. I remember Calgary's A CHANNEL set was very yellow.

It's still yellow in Calgary, but the setup of the screen is different.

This probably isn't a good place to admit I have a signed, framed picture of Beverly Mahood in my guest bathroom.

Apparently Beverley just left the show in the last week or so to do an new album back in Ontario. I could take or leave her Lace stuff too. I could never shake the fact that they were basically a Canadian Dixie Chicks Rip-Off, but I really liked a few songs on each of her other two CDs, so I'll probably be picking that one up.

I also really miss Stephanie's music. I've got as much of it as I can justify going through my restaurant's playlists, and everyone that works for us says that they really like her stuff over most of the other music too (especially Way Over My Heart) but 90% of my staff are female so that might explain that statistic.

What album was COUPLE O NTHE CAKE on, anywow? Thta video is hilarious.

I'm still having a hard time finding Stephanie on any of the A Channel or CITY TV listings, though...and a Gogle search on her comes up with little to nothing.

I find it interesting with Tephanie, though...she has a great slow song with Jeffrey Steele (formerly of Bopy Howdy, who sang SHE'D GIVE ANYTHING) and yet she can't get any media coverage in the USA. Go fig.

Try NewDay on the Victoria a-channel. I know that she was on NewDay on the New VI before all the name changes, but she also had a page for her and the show as well. It looks like "A-Channel Morning" has replaced NewDay actually, although one of their schedule grids still shows NewDay as their morning show. I think Steele wrote a bunch of stuff for her too if I can remember my liner notes correctly.

I think Couple on the Cake is on a Steve Fox album and not on any of Beverley's. It was when she was getting Lace started up and I don't think she make a solo album until Moody Blue and by then the song had come and gone.
