The Yankees get Shawn Chacon from the Rockies in exchange for two minor-league prospects, and it's being said he could start as early as Saturday. He's 1-7 with an overall ERA in the low 4s, however that number was significantly inflated by starts he made at Coors Stadium - at home games he was at 4.97, and on the road he was pulling a 3.19. Just to show you how awful the Rockies have been this season - in six starts he had no wins, five losses, and only posted 12 earned runs. Talk about a lack of run support. The only thing that worries me is that his walk count is pretty high.

I wonder if this means that the Yankees have basically given up on Kevin Brown as a starter?

Well, this was more'n likely going to be Brown's last year anyways, right? Ahunno, Chacon doesn't feel like a Yankee. Neither the late-90's dynasty or the recent collection of egos.

Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, Al Leiter, Hideo Nomo, Shawn Chacon. Truly, THIS is a rotation to be feared!

Considering the track record the Yankees have had the past few years on pitchers moving from the N.L. to the A.L., this move doesn't do much, unless they put Chacon in the bullpen to help shorten the game. Nomo does actually scare me with the Yankees, as he is a weird enough pitcher (along the lines of a Wakefield), where he can be unhittable for 4 or 5 straight starts, and then be awful for 7 or 8 in a row. If the Yankees put him in the rotation at the right time, he might be streaky enough to put them over the top.

I think, outside of the plan for him to start tomorrow, he will probably be slated for the pen. It is a safe move (insurance), since they didn't give much to get him, and if he turns out to be a gem, he is only 27. Nomo is more insurance, but unless Chacon totally eats it this weekend, I don't know when he'd start. Aaron Small (surely not on anyone's long-term agenda) has been solid enough in both starts, and Leiter will be allowed another start at least to repeat the Boston magic...probably not happening.

I had been hoping the Yanks would scoop him up right after Tampa dumped him, thus keeping Brown away from pinstripes all the more, but he has probably pitched his last game for them. Pavano will be back in a week or two, so its Unit, Moose, Pavano, and then Leiter/Chacon/Small/Nomo (and Wang eventually, since the initial prognosis of him being done for the year was worst-case).

This was the move they had to make then, because there'd be a scandal if Steinbrenner had Brown euthanized.
