This is from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter:

Chris Jericho is expected to be gone from the WWE within 6 weeks, with SummerSlam being his last show. Jericho has a multitude of gigs booked for his band, Fozzy, including a ten-day tour of the UK in October.

Well, that's kind of distressing, as I think it'd be a huge blow to the RAW brand. Not sure if he's planning an extended break or going for good.

I can't say it's a huge blow for RAW because he hasn't been used all that well for a while now. He's capable of being a showman in the ring. But he's been treading water for a time now before this title feud. One could argue his last, best use was putting over Batista. I can't say his departure would leave a gaping hole in the stories but it would diminish the show's personality.

I do want to add, as I've mentioned in other threads, that RAW has a dearth of uppercard faces, and his possible departure wouldn't help that.

Although if it is just a break... that may not be a bad thing at all. I can't remember (offhand at least) the last time when Jericho wasn't on television on a regular basis. I can't recall any major injuries, either....

I remember reading somewhere that he was planning on making a break for a while to focus on Fozzy...but I doubt this will be his farewell match...I don't think he's able to make the clean break like Rock did.

Right now..it won't hit..but I think when you watch Raw and don't actually see him...then it'll hit that he's gone..

Well the way Jericho probably sees it, there's not much else for him to do in the WWE right now. He's has not really had some notable feuds or matches in a while, and he seems to have grown complacent.

Whatever he ends up doing, good luck to him.

I'd be one to guess he'll get "injured" or he'll lose a retirement match, and return half a year later.

And I'll be waiting, with open arms. I'll miss him if/when he's gone.

If he leaves he will be sorely missed becasue he one of a select few that is like Teflon, bad angles don;t hurt him not does jobbing to younger guys. And he can always be plugged in as a viable title contender/holder. And also, he is the best active wrestler on RAW on the mic.

Hmmm, I wonder which heel could come to Raw to fill the spot that Y2J leaves...

Someone who's out at the moment through 'injury'.

Someone who's been told never to return to Smackdown!

Someone who could be an integral part of a new version of Evolution...

Hmmm, who could it be?

Here's hoping!

Stephanie McMahon?

Kidding.... but I really think the Raw roster is deep enough where they don't *need* Jericho right now, or Hassan for that matter. Long term, absolutely, but for him to take six-eight months off and re-energize his character, I think its doable...

Don't forget someone with a weasely manager in a suit who goes nuts shouting on the mic.

Yes, of course, Triple H. But his vacation is still a few months longer!

Anyhoo, is this the story from last week's Observer or did I somehow miss an updated one in this week's? The gist I got from the first one was that he wanted to do the Fozzy tour, he knew he was stale as a character, and his contract was expiring but he had no intention of going anywhere else -- so the best thing for him would be to go off TV, concentrate on his music, and then come back as a freshened up act. The company has been expecting this all along, hence the "Jericho thinks he's bigger than wrestling" direction for his character.

Edit: ah ha, from today's website update

The reports on the internet that this week's Observer says he's gone are incorrect. This week's Observer says he has a contract extension in his hands and next week's issue has a follow-up. He is going to do more touring with his band after SummerSlam which means if he does stay, he will be missing a lot of wrestling dates. WWE at this point is going under the impression he won't be with them after the show because they can't go by any other impression until he signs, and thus there are no plans for him after August. If he does sign, obviously, that will change.

The only curiosity is that they'd finally give him such a major push in the last three months before he was gone, but I guess with Hunter also gone and Edge doing the Matt Hardy deal, their only other option was Angle, and they don't want to go back to that match just yet. Whatever the case, it's been a pretty delightful going away party for Chris. The first four months of this year, I think the character finally hit a saturation point, hard, of how long you can be a just-underneath act before you painfully run out of ways to be interesting. But even after that he reinvented himself one last time with the new walking-out-the-door persona, and he had a couple of strong matches putting over Shelton Benjamin and John Cena in the process.

Much as I will miss Chris, this makes the most sense of any way they could book a break for him. It makes so much sense that it's almost suprising that the WWE bookers came up with it.

You have a Chris Jericho who's on a "walking out the door" character... Priming the audience for the possibility that he might be gone. However then this shakeup with the titles, which then involves Y2J, reminding viewers that "oh yeah, he IS ME caliber", ending with an "injury" at Summerslam. Chris takes a couple months off, and comes back to, hopefully, the same kind of WWE self-felating promos and fanfare that Hunter got a few years back and Angle got a bit before WM 19. He comes back as a Super-over face, and takes up right where he left off, in the title hunt... which by that time will be back on a heel HHH after his 3 month stint as a face.

I can't think of a better way to revitalize a character that, as far as I can remember, hasn't had even a one week break from RAW since I started watching wrestling again in early 2002.

I can't see Jericho hanging up his boots for good any time in the near future, career-ending injuries (or sudden super-stardom of fozzy) aside. He just loves the business too much. Watch him perform, he's goofy, but he's got that connection with the audience that guys like goldberg (As over as he was) just don't have. The crowd recognizes that he's out there because he loves it.

I read absolutely nothing into this other than Jericho has not yet re-signed for after Summerslam, and one of the sticking points is the time he'd need off to go touring with his band. All this assumption and speculation that it's a definite he's gone afterwards is just that...assumption and speculation.

I can't help but be reminded of all the internet speculation not too long ago that Kane was gone from WWE.

From WWE.COM

Chris Jericho wants to set the record straight.

With various outside sources reporting that Jericho has yet to sign a contract extension with WWE, the former undisputed champion made sure to contact WWE.com and denounce those reports.

I signed an extension on Monday in Cleveland at Gund Arena, Jericho said. Ive been working with WWE for six years and Im not going anywhere.

Easy enough way to squash that rumor...Case Closed.

I'm just happy he is getting of television for awhile. Hopefully it is longer than six weeks and hopefully he goes to Smackdown when he comes back as a 'free agent' and fills the void left by Hassan.
