Leave it to Bill Simmons (or in this case, his underling Mark "Birdman" Dursin) to grace ESPN.Com with tales of the worst/most offensive angles in WWF/E history ...

There are "head-shaking" appalling angles. There are "spirit-crushing" appalling angles. And there is Katie Vick, which is worse than the plastic hand, worse than Vince choking out his daughter, even worse than Al Wilson dying on TV. It's the worst thing ever seen on a wrestling show, and may just be the worst thing ever seen on cable television -- and that includes "The Real Gilligan's Island."

He makes some interesting points, but I don't think the "return" of Razor and Diesel even belongs in the top 5, let alone at #2.

There were things that possibly topped fake Diesel and Razor when it comes to horrible entertainment, but that angle was an absolutely boneheaded move. It shouldn't be second, however, maybe right in there at 5.

Simmons is always great for these wrestling tidbits, though. He's one of the columnists I regularly read. As such, his Intern and Birdman usually bring the goodness as well.

Me, I can't believe that a true desire to "entertain" motivated any of these appalling angles. Instead, it seems clear that these angles came out of WWE's giddy hankering to "push the envelope" -- not for anything as noble as "entertainment," but just to see what they could get away with. An exchange between wrestler Shawn Michaels and his on-screen "boss" Eric Bischoff best sums up my position: Michaels came out on TV and lambasted Triple-H for his "Katie Vick" shtick, prompting Bischoff to ask, "Oh, does a little necrophilia offend you as a Christian, Shawn?" To wit, Michaels replied, "No, it offends me as a wrestling fan."

Brilliant! I must have missed this quote after thinking this very thing while not tuning into Raw for awhile.

Definitely. In fact it seems totally out of place in the list, seeing as it was mainly meant to show the tasteless and offensive angles they've run in the past. Razor/Diesel II was just dumb, not offensive.

I'm surprised he didn't throw in all of the Undertaker's crucifixions instead. I loved the angle but it always seemed to be one of the things writers would talk about to point out how disgusting the company had become.

I think it's difficult to narrow the list to five, but he seemed to at least get five stupid angles listed. He didn't include anything non-retarded in his list. He has always kind of brought the same kind of sensibility that CRZ brought to his recaps and Scaia brings to his still.
