ESPN.com - MLB - Yanks make deal for Leiter
I seriously doubt the struggling Leiter is the solution the Yankees are looking for and I especially don't think they should IMMEDIATELY trot him out in a pivotal game against Boston. But that's why I'm not in charge, I guess. Promote this thread! | | BigSteve

Al Leiter had more walks than strikeouts and an ERA of just under seven runs a game - and that was while pitching in the NL in a pitcher's park. I would be shocked if he makes more than three starts. Over/under on the number of innings he pitches is 13 1/3.
I can't believe that Yanks have sunk so low that the back of their rotation right now looks to be Tim Redding-Darryl May-Al Leiter. That's so unbelievably atrocious that words can't describe how bad that is. Things are bad right now for the Yanks, especially since Mussina and Johnson look like they're about ready for retirement.

I believe it's a full game (soon to be back to one and a half after we beat the Mariners tonight).
Anyway my point is this:
Orioles: Spent $73,914,333 for 49 wins Yankees: Spent $208,306,817 for 48 wins
The fact that the Yankees aren't ten games ahead of us (or even winning the season series) is positively staggering in and of itself.
(Can anyone tell that I'm enjoying the Yankees' slow descent into the seventh circle of hell almost as much as I'm enjoying the Orioles' surprising Wild Card lead ).

Redding was Christians vs. Lions bad, except the Christians had a better chance. Glad the Yankees picked up Leiter rather than the rumor Boston was going to get him if the 10 days expired. Finesse N.L. pitcher who would get over 100 pitches before the 5th don't do that well in the A.L. If Boston can knock off Leiter, that means 4 games off the schedule, and they don't see New York or Baltimore again until September. 15-3 minimum vs. Tampa and K.C. the rest of the way is necessary for the Red Sox. | Quezzy

Hahahah
RSN is right though, Leiter can't be as bad as Redding. At the very least Leiter is more experienced and is used to playing in New York so that won't be a factor either. And who knows, sometimes a change of scenary is good, maybe he's struggling because the whole Florida team was struggling. He is just a season removed from a 3.21 season. Sure he hardly made it past the 5th inning, but atleast it was a good five innings.
I hope this is his last season though, I thought he was great doing commentary during the World Series last year and I've heard the Mets have talked to him about some kind of commentator job when he retires. So I'm looking forward to that. | StaggerLee

Either way, I will still take being within 2 of first place a week after the all star break. Not a bad spot to be in. | Pizza Pasta

So, of course, he's going to pitch a no-hitter tonight versus Boston... :P | Brian P. Dermody

Not too shabby, especially against defending world champs. I remember when he came up... Why, that was before some of you kids were even born.
And despite Gordon and Cano's best efforts, Leiter pulled in the win. Not too bad for a guy who's been pitching since I was in elementary school. | redsoxnation

| #10 Posted on 17.7.05 2011.25 Reposted on: 17.7.12 2028.54 | Drop 6 of 8 to Baltimore and New York. Play sub-.500 ball for the season outside of the 12 out of 13 stretch in mid June. It is time for the Red Sox to start dumping the dead weight. Yet again they get burned by only having 4 guys on the bench due to carrying 12 pitchers, so Cora has to bat in the 9th instead of Olerud. There better be a good reason Bellhorn left the game after the 7th, hopefully to be placed on waivers. Maybe now that the GM is done with his little concert, he can actually focus on getting rid of the flotsam and jetsam that inhabits the roster: Bellhorn, Millar, Embree and Halama. If Dave Roberts can be traded, no one should be considered sacred, unless they put up numbers. | jfkfc

| #11 Posted on 18.7.05 0929.02 Reposted on: 18.7.12 0929.05 | I gotta say, I honestly almost threw up in my mouth when I heard the initial speculation about Leiter being picked up by the Yanks (which was probably 10 minutes after he was designated for assignment), but after watching Maydding, I figured that he couldn't be THAT much worse. That performance last night was about the last thing I expected, and I will still fear the worst and hope for the best for his next outing in CaliforniaAnneheimLosAngeles.
With them signing Leiter, and him pitching well, I was half-expecting them to make a go at Nomo (sports.espn.go.com)...

Looks like that potential deal has fallen apart. Good for Arroyo, I'd hate for him to have had to record "Dirty Water" for naught.
The new rumor that seems to be popping up everywhere (some examples HERE)in regards to Barnett would have him end up in Baltimore after a three-team deal including Pittsburgh.
Watching Leiter's performance on Sunday, I have to admit I was impressed. I guess a change of venue can go a long way, but we'll have to wait and see what he does on Friday. Personally, I could see Leiter being pretty valuable as a middle-relief guy. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
