The-W.com user locater. The W...orld

I'm not sure if this is a great idea, but I wanted to try it out. To make this work, just update your latititude and longitude (not exactly, but pick somewhere kind of close to give people an idea of where you are - maybe a local shopping center or something?)

Note: Some people may not want to give out this much informationa about where they are. If that's the case, just put in any location for your city if you'd like. We're not looking to see your house -- but I would like to get an idea of which city you are in. Just pick a landmark in your town and find the latitude and longitude for it.

You can edit your profile here: http://the-w.com/editprofile.php and it should update the map immediately. If you need help finding your latitude and longitude, just click on the link from the edit profile page.

It's all built using the Google maps API and some scripting I set up in our database. Let me know if you have any problems with any of this.

Thanks! (PS- I don't live in the river south of Qualcomm stadium, but I'm pretty close to there. You don't need an exact location )

That's a pretty cool feature, and it's amazing to see the detail they get in the little towns, right down to the direction of one-way streets.

For some reason, though, my latitude and longitude won't save when I edit my profile. I've entered it twice but when I check my profile again it hasn't saved anything.

I get the same thing. It saved the change to my sig, though.

It didn't save for me, either.

I think at this point it's safe to say that it's not working for anybody and it's probably best to just wait until Guru has a chance to look at it rather than everybody piling on with a "me too" post...

I like the map, but my experience with Google's maps is that they always miss one's house by a good block or two.

Sorry, I tested it on the admin user editing page and not on the regular profile editing. I think I probably never put it in the SQL statement for the update.

It is working now, please continue to input your information. So far we have 4 people plotted.

Isn't the map going to get pretty busy pretty fast with all those little yellow teardrops? That said, I put my info in there, too!-

Well, you can zoom in. I didn't want to start it off USA centric, but if it turns out most of the dots fit in a Canada/US zoom, I may change the default zoom level to a lower level.

I like it. Will it be added to the top of the page, like the Calendar and such?

It's a neat visual right now... as of this moment it's Zim, JJD and myself playing 4 Corners with everyone else in a big northeast/Great Lakes cluster.

Count me in as the "likes" crowd. So long as you don't enter your actual lat/long I think we'll avoid the stalker crowd.

It's kind of neat to see geographic demographics for this bunch.

Any way to make the popups when you click on someone a standard size? No biggie...but a couple of those things were rather large.

Good idea. Maybe shrink people's avatars to the same size they're shrunk to in their posts?

Other than that, it's pretty neat
