Well, I just picked up the DVD this morning and everything is as amazing as it was on the night of June 12th. There is, however, one tiny problem.

No Enter Sandman for Sandman's entrance!!!

I understand that it'd cost a bunch to get Metallica's permission, or whatever was needed, but if they could do it for the PPV couldn't they have done it for the DVD? Sandman's entrance is just not the same without Enter Sandman, period. Ugh.

Then what theme does he enter to?

I was just on my way out to pick up this DVD and I have to wonder if it has the same compression problems that a lot of WWE PPV DVDs have or if it's a clear transfer. Nothing ticks me off more than the quality of the WM21 DVD where the crowd just looks like one giant blocky mess in parts. =|

It's had no compression problems for me, though the only compression problem I've ever had with a WWE DVD is this one part during the Evolution/Rock & Sock match on WM20. Everything's crisp, looks good, the themes are ECW sound quality-ish and the other sounds are great.

Sandman comes out to some generic, really bad attempt at something resembling Enter Sandman.

I have that DVD, and I dont think I've ever noticed anything like that. Which part do you see the problem in & what exactly is it? I'll have to check it out again when I get home.

Bugger. Not that it's going to stop me buying, but I expected this was going to be the case. I would hope that if ECW is started back up again and if the Sandman is part of it, that they'll get something worked out for using the song, or at least find somebody to cover it so they can get it cheaper.

No. For whatever reason, they can use copyrighted, mainstream music for free on live events such as TV or PPV, but they cannot use the songs when those events are released commercially without paying royalties to the copyright holder.

Sort of. I went back and played the entrance, you have to listen reeeeeeally well but the crowd singing along is there.

It's when Batista is tagged in for the first time. It only lasts for about 5 seconds, but it had me worried for a minute that I'd miss the Flair Elbow.

Oh yes, it's there. It's listed as 'Alternate Commentary' in the Extras, no mention of JBL until you select it though.

Well, dammit. Unless it'd have been such a hit to the pocketbooks that it'd negate selling the DVDs in the first place, they should've paid those royalties. But then I have no idea how much they'd have to, or what the deal is there. All I know is Sandman's entrance....no Metallica.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't "free" for them to use it the night of the event, either.

If Weird Al Yankovic can do it, I don't see why Vince can't do it.

I KNEW they'd do something annoying as hell like that. I'm glad I didn't get rid of that broadcast copy I have. Since I have zero interest in a Bradshaw commentary, I'll just forget about buying it. Not so much because I care about hearing Enter Sandman, but because I hate that practice of changing anything from the original broadcast in general. Fork over the money for the song already. Does someone there not realize HOW stupid it must look (and sound if you can hear the crowd) for this 5 minute entrance that is supposedly this huge part of a show to have an audience singing along to a song that they can't hear?

So now that we know they messed with the audio at least once, can anyone tell if they also edited out some of the chants or crowd reaction that Vince may not have liked? How about Tazz's "War Machine" variation?

Because what Weird Al is does a parody...legal-wise, that's different than just using the actual song.

Actually, for all we know, maybe WWE did ask Metallica (or whoever owns the song) if they could use it, and maybe they said no, or wanted to charge some insane above-market price.

PsychoMidget, what kinds of extras does this DVD have? I remember reading after the show that WWE cameras were EVERYWHERE backstage soaking in as much "extra" material & interviews for the DVD that they could (and they intentionally put a rush job on it to beat the Hardcore Homecoming DVD to the store).

I remember Weird Al saying in an interview that not only does he have to get permission from the artist to parody his/her song, but that they also get a few cents for every cd he sells. He mentioned several artists (Prince, Paul McCartney and a few others I can't remember) who would not allow him to parody their songs.

No, not at all. He has a personal policy to seek the original artists' permission first, but he doesn't have to. Witness the case of Coolio, who hates Wierd Al because Wierd Al spoofed "Gangsta's Paradise" despite Coolio's objections.

Too bad they couldn't have left the crowd part. They were plenty loud and it actually sounded better than most concert sing-alongs.

Keep in mind that Yankovic has for years stated that he believed he HAD permission from Coolio for use of the song before he did it, and didn't realize otherwise until after Coolio went public with it. Of course, Weird Al could be lying about that, but he never seemed like the type to want to cause problems between himself and the original artists (unless they get obnoxious with him, like Prince).

I recall that Yankovic began getting such agreements after he parodied a Billy Joel song ("Still Rock and Roll To Me," if I remember correctly). When things started heating up temper-wise and legal-wise with Joel, Yankovic had to have the song pulled from airplay on Dr. Demento.

I believe there are different types of rights available for usage when it comes to music. A one-off usage for the live event probably came a lot cheaper than usage for the DVD. Just a guess, however.

But we've really gone off on a tangent here, haven't we?

To bring in something about the ECW PPV that hadn't been mentioned yet - the closed-captioning used during the original PPV broadcast was completely uncensored. I would suspect that they had someone on the bleep button during the broadcast, but forget to mention anything to the instant captioner that night. So if you must have your feel of the "F" word, you'll find it there.

Of course, the DVD itself is not captioned. Another reason I have for keeping the tape I have of the PPV.

Bah I say to Coolio. Did he ask Stevie Wonder's permission before changing "Pasttime Paradise" into "Gangsta's Paradise"? And in today's day and age when music sampling is the norm rather than the exception (because why be original when you can steal other people's stuff with less effort?), his position looks even more like that of a crybaby.

The "Enter Sandman" snafu's very disappointing to me, and I'd never even seen a Sandman entrance before One Night Stand. (I watched WCW, dudes.) Tell me they at least kept him "jacking off" the Singapore cane.

I was hoping they'd at least use the Motorhead version of "Enter Sandman" for the DVD since they recorded that for an ECW album and WWE is on great terms with Motorhead anyway.

It seems like such a minor detail, but really, I was looking forward to getting the DVD too for Sandman's entrance. I missed out on alot of ECW growing up, since I didn't have access to that stuff. But seeing the energy and impact of the entrance especially at "One Night Stand", it was 10x more awesome than usual, i'm sure. Plus since the PPV, "Enter Sandman" has gone into regulat rotation with my little "stuff of the moment" playlist on ITunes.

I'll still get the DVD especially for the Tanaka/Awesome match and Lance's farewell.
