Being an avid Cards fan, I'm definitely concerned that 3/5ths of the original pitching staff are already on the DL.

Woody Williams
Garrett Stephenson
Andy Benes (will retire probably)
Rick Ankiel (started on DL with tendonitis)

Hopefully by the end of the season, Cards fans will see this
as their rotation (in no particular order)

Matt Morris
Darryl Kile
Garrett Stephenson/Rick Ankiel
Bud Smith
Woody Williams

The reason the Cards were so good the past two years was because the entire rotation stayed healthy for most of the year (more so in 1999 than 2000)

So the Cards could be in trouble if they are stuck at the gate, especially when they're going to let Mike Timlin start. What's next? Luther Hackman trying to close?

Let's go Cards!

With Stephenson hurt and Williams hurt bringing up Smith to rejoin the rotation was important. Unfortunately Benes imploded and now Smith is in his spot. Stephenson should return soon but i dont remember how long Williams will be out due to the strain (or whatever he has).

What was definitely the Redbirds strength has turned into a weakness rt now. They have to have someone start the ball every 5th time to at least allow a decent amount of rest for the starters. Who else would you have start? Mathews? i dont know about that one... Stechulte (sp?)? He's already shown weakness plus they still need to keep their only decent middle relief.

When Williams comes back he will provide needed innings for the staff (provided he stays healthy). Smith has fantastic control and showed last year that he can prove valuable to the rotation. Morris is off to a spectacular year. He has 4 wins and has beaten Shilling. Kile had two decent starts before giving up 4 runs yesterday.

Veres and Kline can continue to set up for Jason I. Timlin also does that and can come in to close people down. That also makes one of those three become available to do middle relief, long relief or even start. If Timlin has longer durability pitch wise then it was a good move to chose him to start.

Ankiel is a completely different story. Just when you thought he had beaten the mental thing he gets tendonitis. Will he be able to bounce back to his rookie year form?

Well, now you can add Bud Smith to that list.

Will someone tell Dave Veres to go out, pitch well, and not do an impression of Luther Hackman on the mound. Geez, can we try not to give up the gopher ball when we have a chance to win?

Actually, Bud Smith is on the DL. Courtesy of mlb.com:

ST. LOUIS -- The list of Cardinals pitchers on the disabled list has grown to five as left-hander Bud Smith has been placed on the 15-day DL with what is being called a mild strain in his pitching shoulder. The move is retroactive to Monday.

The Cardinals, who were on the road in New York, had sent Smith back to St. Louis earlier this week because there was some concern as to why he had not been able to go at least six innings in any of his three starts this season. Although the tests revealed no serious damage, Smith is expected to be out about two weeks.

I believe Williams is slated for a mid-May return. Can't be soon enough, in my estimation. As for Ankiel, assume he's not back, be surprised if he is. I'll let you know when/if he comes through Memphis, since I'll probably drop everything to see him in action.

OK, who gave me crap when I picked the Cards to finish middle of the pack in the Central this year?
Naw, I'm not gloating or anything. It sucks when your team is crippled by injuries like that. Honestly, I *DO* feel for y'all.

Thing is, anyone who's paid attention to LaRussa over the years *had* to see this coming. It just seems like after that three-year AL title winning spell in Oakland, he's had intermittent "luck" (Luck or the affects of arm-slagging? I dunno.) with this pitching staffs. Shoot, the Benes brothers never recovered from 1996.

Maybe this is all really the fault of LaRussa? Just food for thought. I dunno.

The trouble for the Cards is that their minor leagues are a bare cupboard. Their best pitching prospects, Journell and Narveson, made a combined 1 start above A ball entering the season. They've already called up Josh Pearce who was unimpessive early in the season in AAA, and they've really nobody else. A couple starters are off to decent starts in AAA, and would probably be better bets than throwing Timlin out there every 5th day. But still, things look bleak until the staff gets healthy.

The thing about AAA is this:

All the pitchers down here are up there. They've already called them up. Crudale, Smith (although he was probably going to get there eventually), Italian what's-his-name that started a few days ago, all of them came from Memphis. They've already used everything there is down here. Next stop, AA?
