According to Tony and Mike on PTI, the White Sox canned their PA announcer for playing a Whitesnake song when Chuck Finley pitched the other night.
I knew this was going to happen, but I didn't think that someone would get fired over it. Maybe because Finley actually filed for divorce from Tawny.

You're right. In fact, when they introduced the starting lineup, they should have aired the entire Sportscenter report on his wife's crimial history. Please, have some class, you're representing the entire city.
It's fine to have fun of players at their own expense at times. Hence all the blooper reels, and the aforementioned Wade Boggs incident, and plenty of others. I have no issue with those. But when a guy is getting a divorce from his wife who attacked him while wacked out on drugs, who also has other charges against her from a different incident, you should let it go. | spf

If I can envision Jay or David or Conan making fun of the situation, then I say let the mocking begin as long as its within boundaries. I do think playing the SC reel or intro'ing Finley as Chuck "please Tawny put the shoe down" Finley would have been too much. However, I'm not sure sneaking in a Whitesnake song during pre-game warmups is really that horribly egregious an offence. Had no one made a fuss it would have been a couple of minutes of aggravation for Finley, a laugh or two on the local sports talk the next day, and then it would be done. Now the story is in its third day, and everytime the story comes up the entire ugly history of the whole thing gets brought up and hashed over again. So now there's been a whole new rash of stories about it, and a whole new set of ways to make fun of Finley. And even though he wasn't involved in any way with the whole incident, people are going to look at him as a guy who can't take a joke at all and some poor guy got fired for a stupid harmless joke.

It wouldn't have been bad had this been a simple oversight. But it wasn't a mistake. Hey, I found it funny, myself, but as someone who has worked on college basketball radio broadcasts and baseball and hockey PA, this is something you just don't do.
Plus, no matter how trivial this seems, players will remember it, and this lessons the chance (very slightly, mind you, but it does) that any friend of Finley will want to go to Chicago as a free agent if there is a similar offer from somewhere else. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
