Canseco agrees to minor league contract with White Sox

April 18, 2002

CHICAGO (AP) -- Jose Canseco's quest for 500 homers brought him back to the Chicago White Sox.

Canseco, who needs 38 homers to reach 500 in his career, agreed to terms Thursday on a minor league contract with the White Sox. He'll report to Triple-A Charlotte and be activated in time for the Knights home game Tuesday.

``Jose still has a desire to play, and we told him last fall that we would have a place for him in our minor league system if he needed it,'' White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said.

``He will have a chance to play himself back into shape in Charlotte and then we will see where things go from there,'' Williams said.

Canseco, 37, signed with the White Sox last June and hit .258 with 16 home runs and 49 RBIs in 256 at-bats. He played 76 games, almost all of them as a DH. He was a good fit at the time, with the White Sox needing someone to replace the injured Frank Thomas.

``Jose did a tremendous job filling in for us last season and handled himself with nothing but class,'' Williams said.

With Thomas healthy again, though, the White Sox didn't have a spot for Canseco and he became a free agent. He went to spring training with the Montreal Expos but was released after being told he wouldn't be an everyday player.

An AL player his entire career, he has been in the outfield only 13 times in the last three years.

A six-time All-Star, Canseco ranks 22nd on the career home run list with 462, three behind Dave Winfield. He is second among active players, trailing only Barry Bonds.

The AL Rookie of the Year in 1986, he won AL MVP honors in 1988, when he became the first player in major league history to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in the same season.

I'm a fan of Canseco. I have been ever since i saw the bash brothers. I know a lot of people dont like him but that doesn't change the fact that i do. I hope he does reach the 500 mark. Provided he comes to the majors.

any opinions on canseco's chances of making the hall of fame either as his numbers stand now or if he gets 500 home runs? IMO yes in either case, but i'm not basing it on anything other than my own damn opinion.

Canseco won't make the Hall unless he gets 500 HR, and even then all bets are off. Nothing's guaranteed even then.

Where is Canseco going to play on the Sox? I'm sure he doesn't want to be a pinch hitter all the time, I know he had a problem with that last year. The way Frank and Konerko are hitting, it would be hard to find any time at DH. Barring an injury, there really isn't much for Canseco up with the Sox.

Considering Frank has been kinda fragile as of late, I'm sure they're just keeping him around to be safe. Thomas goes down, or they decide to trade Konerko for a solid pitcher, you plug in Jose and he brings some power.
