Borrowed a copy of X&Y from a friend, and my disinterest towards Coldplay has not abated. I don't get all of the U2/Radiohead comparisons, since it seems to me like they combine the worst parts of both bands. The Scientist is a great song, but otherwise, there isn't a tune in their entire catalogue that really interests me.

I have both of their first 2 CDs and like them both...but will agree, they're not for everyone.

I really enjoyed the first album ... the second one was decent, but tolerable. I just get a little tired of hearing about them 5 minutes.

But, hey, the singer gets to go home and knock da boots with Gwenyth Paltrow.

Put me in the camp that won't change the station when they come on, but will never sincerely utter the sentence, "What this situation calls for is some Coldplay!" I've always gotten the Radiohead-LITE vibe from them, and I can't understand the U2 comparison at all.

Most of the songs seem pretty amusing in small doses. At the right moment and with the right mood, some can be absolutely lovely. But I've noticed that prolonged listening to Coldplay songs makes the songwriter's couplet-heavy writing style really start to grate on my mind like a nursery rhyme. Add in the fact that a lot of the lyrics — at least to a non-fan — can seem fairly aimless or (I'm trying to be diplomatic here) unprofound, and the couplet rhymes can seem all the more forced.

The New York Times agrees with you. So do I, for that matter.

I was just having this conversation at work today - it's not that Coldplay is bad...persay. In the right context, in small doses, they're perfectly acceptable background music. I do not get the cult that surrounds them, but they're always springing up cults around bands that strike me as too mediocre to even bother hating.

(Examples: Tool/A Perfect Circle, Interpol, Dashboard Confessional, that same album U2's been releasing over and over again for the past fifteen years or so - that's right, I said it - none of it outright sucks, but none of it is really worthy of having an opinion on.)

Dude, you can argue that U2's been putting out the same album for, like, five years, but if you think that Pop and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb are the same album, you obviously haven't heard one or the other.

Oh, and on topic--I REALLY dig Coldplay. I think they've got a good sound, Martin's voice is really solid, and A Rush of Blood to the Head has a lot of really good songs on it. It's an easy album for me to get in to, and it gets stuck in my head in the best possible way. So, no, I don't think Coldplay sorta sucks.

His voice annoys the ever living shit out of me. Whiney sounding crying bullshit. And, none of the songs are particularly catchy that I have hear, with the exception of Yellow. (dont give me CLOCKS as an example of a good song, take away the piano part and its absolute shit)

I pretty much dont get the Radiohead love, but I can at least respect thier musicianship. Its the lyrics that lose me.

U2 on the other hand, are great, and always have been. So, to compare Coldplay to U2 is a bit unfair to coldplay.

I always thought the comparison to U2 wasn't so much musically (though they both play "earnest pop music") but in that both bands are from the same (broadly speaking) geographic area and are both very open about their political motivations. So they are the same in that they are both politcally active corporate bands that play earnest, technically sound pop music. I think that's a pretty fair comparison.

I think Coldplay is ok. I didn't like much of their last CD, and I probably wouldn't go out and buy a Coldplay CD or anything, but...I don't intensely dislike them or anything. I have a few of their songs on various compilation CDs, and I never really skip their songs, but I've never really go out of my way to listen to them. Maybe I'm just not politcally motivated enough to get into them.

I must say that after listening to the new album, my faith in Coldplay is renewed. One helluva an effort that I recommend.
