Best way to give your listening audience a coronary:
At 5 p.m. Friday, just as Frank Sinatra's "Summer Wind" faded out, WCBS listeners heard a voice announce: "Why don't we play what we want? There's a whole world of songs out there."
The first song played on the new 'CBS-FM: "Fight for Your Right" by the Beastie Boys. | Promote this thread! | | spf

It's pretty refreshing to hear "Stayin' Alive" right before "Highway to Hell" :) | redsoxnation

After they started the Beastie Boy song, did someone yell Booga on the air? | Excalibur05

Actually it saved a lot of bickering at work as it's the only station that's pretty much guarenteed to play something that everybody likes. As an old "radio guy" I hate it, because I hate the automated DJing, and I miss listening to live DJs in studio (especially market specific ones), but I think their playlist is probably the best one in the market so, I guess I'll keep tuning in. | FMW

I'm pretty sure the Jack in Toronto uses in-studio local DJ's still. | DJ FrostyFreeze

The automated DJ voice here in LA is kind of a jerk too. I dont like him. I wonder if it's the same guy in every city? And do any of these stations do the occasional news/traffic reports? | ekedolphin

"Now time for the weather report. Go to the window. Look outside. See that? That's the weather."
I, too, am a fan of the cool playlist, and the auto-DJ's prickishness is a long-awaited respite from the stereotypical hyper or perky DJ. | Oliver

Toronto's JACK FM 92.5 (925jackfm.com) has a listen live option; hopefully that helps. The snarky/sarcastic/bored sounding person who does that "Playing what we want" line did some Wendy's a while back, and...well, they sucked. | Gerald

Our oldies station here in Chicago was switched to Jack the same day as WCBS. As for the automated DJ, I think he's quite funny. | PeterStork

How does it keep up with the news like that?
The whole Jack format for me seems like a way for terrestrial radio to catch up with satrad; it's basically the same as I have on XM 25 "The Blend," along with the decade formats on 4 through 9. Just no commercials on the bird. | SchippeWreck
