Looking through the net at work (man I have way too much time on my hands) I found a member of the old NWA version of the Varsity Club that I had totally forgotten about- Danny Spivey. Anyone know what happened to this guy, and are there any reliable sites with pictures? I forgot what he looked like.

He became Waylon Mercy in the WWF in the Mid 90's (a con man type gimmick), but then eventually retired. Last I saw he was trying to get work modeling. He has a site on teh net with his portfolio.

I guess he was also in a tag team I vaguely remember, The Skyscrapers, with Sid Vicious. (Supposedly Vicious was later replaced by the Undertaker?)

Waylon Mercy was actually based on the Max Cady character from Cape Fear.

Spivey was also the second version of the Varsity Club (He wore a Georgia jacket, but don't know his credentials).

He also wrestled in All Japan for a while and teamed I think with Stan Hansen.

Huh. He used to have a website at, but I guess he took it down. Lack of modeling jobs I guess.

Tom Billington mentions in his autobiography that Spivey lives in Florida and has bad health problems like himself. Not enough to put him in a wheelchair though. He tried to get something going in Florida in a wrestling federation, but had no luck.

Waylon Mercy was one of the most brilliant gimmicks ever. I wish Spivey could have stuck around a bit longer so the gimmick could realize it's full potential.

Waylon Mercy + Raven = Best Tag Team EVER!

Those two psycho gimmicks would have been so cool to see paired up. I don't think there's any big guy in the WWF today who could pull that gimmick off like Dan.

Both his knees, both his hips, his back are shot, and a few of his vital organs are operating at about 50%. Another guy paying for a hard life.
