I can't be the only one who remembers a while back Nintendo saying they are working on a new Mario platform game much like Mario Sunshine for the Gamecube. With E3 here and gone without a mention of the new game I'm sure they quietly said 'F' it, and trot out the new GC Zelda, and new Super Mario game for the DS.

They did state they are working on new games for Revolution of all major Nintendo franchises such as Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, and Metroid.

Please let the new Metroid game be a 3rd person, no more of the FPS Prime type game or make 2 games one being 3rd person for us people who aren't into FPS. Now I'm a huge fan of the Metroid storyline and franchise over the years from NES, SNES, and GBA so of course I tried Prime 1 & 2, but not being a FPS fan despite the setting of the game in the Metroid universe I just couldn't get into them. I can't play them well or even get into them. I hate missing out on what I admit to be great games with exception for my dislike of the type of game and more importantly the Metroid storyline.

Totally understand how you feel, but disagree a bit:

Mario - Despite being someone who has played, finished, and loved every single Mario game dating back to Donkey Kong, I despised Mario Sunshine and eventually gave up on it around 50 shines in. The first-person camera work was horrible and just extremely frustrating to deal with. So, I'm kinda glad they shelved any new games and hopefully they'll rework the franchise a bit for Revolution to restore its greatness.

Metroid - Generally speaking, I cannot play FPS games for my life, and feel as if my skills peaked around the 16-bit generation. However, I loved both Prime 1 & 2 and thought they were fantastic additions to the franchise, because they still felt like Metroid even with the new perspective.

As it is, Nintendo should continue to give us the best of both worlds with Metroid - 3D on the console sytem, old-school 2D on the handheld. That would probably work best for everyone.

Now bring me that rumored new Kid Icarus game!

I would kill for a new (read: ORIGINAL) 2D Mario game. Something as fun, enjoyable, and awesome as Super Mario World would be perfect.

Just incase you missed it, this was posted on IGN last week from Shigeru Miyamota:

"IGNcube: Can you give us an update on Mario 128?

Shigeru Miyamoto: [Chuckles] I'm just really sorry. I think I've given people the wrong impression with Mario 128. With all the questions I'm getting about this, I really feel like I've done people a disservice. In regards to Mario 128, we're currently doing a lot of Mario experiments back in Kyoto. We are definitely going to have a new Mario for Revolution. Whether or not that's 128 or not, I can't really say. It might be a new Sunshine. We're not sure. We're doing a lot of Mario tests right now for the Revolution."

Agreed. I still enjoy the classic Mario's more than anything from Mario 64 and up. Looks like this is as close as we're going to get:

I never found the 3D Mario games to be much fun. Some things are good in 3D (fighting games, sports, etc. etc.) but for some reason, I didn't like Mario in 3D.

That DS one looks excellent.

But I don't think side scrolling has to be pinned to the handheld experience. There's no reason not to release a game similar to the DS's "3d graphics/2d gameplay" for the Cube.

Hell apply the same principle to Sonic and we can stop going gray haired over Sega's camera issues.

One of the best games I ever played was a 3D/2D game:

WARIO LAND for the Nintendo Virtual Boy.

That's how I think a new 2D/3D Mario game should run.

Of course, not in red, and with lots more colours. That was one amazing game.

Really, anymore companies don't like to release anything in 2D, and that's a damn shame. They figure that because they can make games in 3D, no one will buy 2D anymore, but a lot of the best games are 2D. The last great Castlevania was Symphony of the Night (which I am replaying right now, incidentally), and I still prefer the old 2D Street Fighters to most of the 3D fighters they release now. I think a lot of what's made the Viewtiful Joe series successful is just the fact that it's a side-scroller, and people really missed those. I wish more games would come out in 2D.

I'll chime in with my two cents, though in many ways I've got a lot of the same opinions on this subject as the people who've already posted.

I agree that 2D games are sadly underutilized in the modern game environment. While I got an absolute blast out of playing 3D games Sonic Adventure and Super Mario 64, I think my favorite games in those franchises were Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Super Mario Bros. 3, respectively. Sure they were 2D, but you know what? They were fun as hell! I still play Mario 3 on a somewhat-regular basis, though I play the GBA and occasionally SNES version of the game (I've never owned an NES).

It seems that half of the games I've bought for current-generation systems are classic-game compilations. I have Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Mega Man 10th Anniversary Collection, Namco Museum, and at least two different collections of classic Zelda. I've still got mad love for the games of my childhood.

At the same time, however, there have been many 3D games I've enjoyed-- and in the case of Zelda, I think I've enjoyed Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Wind Waker more than I did the NES and SNES releases of the franchise. Heck, I played Ocarina of Time so much that I can still probably play it in my sleep.

Though I've got nothing but love for the Mario franchise, I could probably wait until the Revolution Era before seeing a new Mario game-- and that's only because Mario Sunshine was a little underwhelming for me (I enjoyed it as a rental, but didn't feel the need to rush out and buy it) and because Mario 1, 2, 3, Lost Levels and Mario World are just so freakin' bloody awesome.
