You do realize by making it 15 and 15, there's interleague play every day of the season (or a longer season with long stretches off of days.)

What they have to do for schedule perfection is add two teams and go 8 divisions of 4, or get rid of 14 teams and go 4 divisions of 4. They're not going to do either.

At the least, I did realize that. But I guess you can count me in as one of those new-school fans that don't care about tradition. Selig has already eliminated the heads of the NL and AL (IIRC), so the only rule they don't agree on is the DH. Basically, to me, this Holy Trinity-esque thing (two leagues that become one) doesn't make any sense. But I have to admit that I'm more of a casual observer of baseball than I am a fan.

Maybe i'm not understanding you right, but I don't see how that happens. My theory went like this, one MLB team plays...

3 games each against 5 teams in the same division in the other league (3x5)=15 games

13 games each against the 4 teams in that team's division (13x4)=52 games.

That leaves 10 teams for said MLB team to play that are in the same league it is but from different divisions. 5 teams they can play 10 times each (5x10)=50 games. The other 5 teams they can play 9 times each (9x5)=45 games.

Still all adds up to 162 games. Plus it's more of a balanced schedule.

Everything you said is right, but the problem is this. Currently, interleague games only happen at certain times (i.e. late May through June before the All-Star break) and when they do occur, every team (well, every team in the AL, at least) is playing a team from the other league. When interleague play is not going on, every team is playing someone in its own league, which can happen because there are an even number of teams in each league. Under your plan, there would be fifteen teams per league, which would mean that there would be seven INTRAleague series, with two teams, one from each league left without an opponent at all times. The only way to remedy this is to a) have those two teams play one another in an interleague series (meaning that interleague play occurs just about every day from April through September) or b)have these two teams sit idle for three to five days waiting for the next set of series to begin. Plan B is impossible because the season would last through November, and I don't think that MLB wants to have the interleague games spread out over the course of the year.

I think I got a little long-winded in there, but I hope I clarified that for you.

That doesn't work though, if you have these matchups...

AL EAST vs. AL CENTRAL - 10 games each
AL EAST vs. AL WEST - 9 games each

...then how many games go do the AL Central teams play vs. the AL West? Nine doesn't work for the West teams and ten doesn't work for the Central teams.

The Mariners' "rivals" are those fightin' Friars from San Diego, not the Rockies.

We're such fierce rivals.

Look at the history of us picking up each others guys as rule 5 draftees, grabbing each other's waiver players, making sweet trades with each other...

The two clubs are practically in bed together.

Seattle should have Milwaukee as the natural rival, due to the Pilots fleeing Seattle for Milwaukee. Hell, if the Red Sox get stuck having to play the Braves every year because the Braves left Boston over 50 years ago, the Brewer/Mariner War should have to occur on a yearly basis as well.

I can see the point now about the scheduling issues. The only way around it seems is instead of having most of the teams play an interleague schedule over a period of several weeks from May through June, but to have 1 interleague series every week for the whole season.

I realize that the last time the Braves played in Boston was about fifty years ago, but didn't the Braves play in Boston for well over half a decade? The Pilots only really existed for one season, and I'm not sure how much rivalry one could squeeze out of Mariners/Brewers unless many Mariners fans loathe Selig. Going further, where are our Orioles/Cardinals or Phillies/A's matchups?

It probably all comes down to the prestige of the franchises playing.

But is that the real reason that Boston and Atlanta play each other interleague? I think it's more because the other four teams in each division have a natural rival in the other league (Baltimore-Philadelphia, Yankees-Mets, Florida-Tampa Bay, and well, when it was Blue Jays-Expos that made a lot more sense than Toronto-Washington).
