| #141 Posted on 4.6.05 1746.13 Reposted on: 4.6.12 1759.01 | Saw the movie today. It took me almost to the end of the movie to stop being angry that the acting and dialogue were so bad and that there's no, "So *that's* what pushed him over the edge" moment. When I finally said, "Stop getting so upset - it's just a bad movie," I was able to watch and enjoy what it was: a movie so bad it's funny.
Seriously, if everybody could forget that this is STAR WARS for a minute and just watch the movie you'd see that this is campy B level stuff on the order of 'Plan 9 From Outer Space'. "You can't win! It's over! I have the high ground!" I really tried not to laugh at that because I *knew* that somewhere in the next minute Anakin was going to get owned, but I just couldn't help myself. I can definitely see myself sitting around with my friends yelling these lines at the screen the way we shout "Groovy" when watching Evil Dead 2.

| #144 Posted on 5.6.05 2251.08 Reposted on: 5.6.12 2251.52 | I finally saw the film today, and despite some of the issues - like TERRIBLE dialog - I was giddy after it ended. I've been pretty over the Star Wars phenomena since I was 11, but about half way through the film I found myself smiling, just enjoying the whole experience.
One of the things that helped - three or four 6-7 year-olds were sitting behind my girlfriend and I, and they were talking through the whole film. Normally, this would drive me nuts, but they were just as excited about the film as I was about Star Wars at that age. And listening to them talk really helped to remind me just how much I LIVED this stuff when I was that age.
The film was fun. And even my girlfriend (to whom I had to explain who Obi-Wan and Anakin were) got a chill when Vader took that first breath. It was a nice break from being an adult. | whatever

IV and it was fantastic how the movies kind of flowed together. Just little things that would have otherwise been glossed over before now have so much more depth to them. One thing that stuck out though - the lightsaber encounter with Darth Vader and Obi-Wan was soooooo scaled down compared to what they came out with for the prequel trilogy. I know a lot of that evolved over time - originally the lightsaber was intended to be a heavier instrument that generally required two-handed use, but the technique difference was still very striking.
Funny too - the "whiny b**ch" gene really carried through the men in that family. | SchippeWreck

Lucas mentions in the commentary that the fight is so different because it's now a very old man vs. a machine. Also, you can assume Obi-Wan never intended to really "fight" Vader, just keep him busy enough and provide a diversion so Luke and co. could get away. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
