CBs Sportsline is reporting that Jerry Rice is in talks with Mike Shanahan & the Denver Broncos about the possibility of joining the team for the upcoming season.

Now I don't know about you guys, but I can still only think of Rice in Red & Gold, even though it's been years since he played in the Bay. I wish he could sign with SF for one season and then go out, but that's probably not going to happen.

Geez, I know Shanahan thinks he can take any homeless guy off the street and make him a 1000-yard running back behind that O-line, but this is just too much. :-)

(EDIT: And yes, I still hate Terrell Davis.)

This is just sad. I wish he would get the hint a retire. A glorious career that will be mared (but not too much) by his inability to accept the game ahs passed him by. Do you think Jordan would ever come back to be the fourth option on a team? Where is Rice's pride?

What if he just wants to suit up and play? He's not anywhere near "Jerry Rice" ability anymore, but he's still go skills. He's not demanding big money or anything, is he?

No. In fact his agent is reporting that basically he will be forced to sign for the veteran minimum. Of course, for a player of his tenure that $765,000 (although only $450,000 counts against the cap). If I was in charge, though, I don't know if I'd want Jerry Rice on my team. If he goes a week without being thrown a pass, everyone is going to talk about what a travesty it is that the league's greatest receiver doesn't get any pass thrown at him.

It's not his fault, but I wouldn't want to go through that hassle.

What a shame. #4 WR in Denver behind Derrius Watts and Ashley Lelie. Sad.

And he probably won't get to wear #80 (unless he can wrangle it away from Rod Smith).

Well, seeing that he took Largent's #80 in Seattle (the beginning of the end of my respect for Rice) I am sure he will get #80 for Rod Smith. That is of course if he makes the team.

I heard this AM that he's not even going to ask Smith for the number. Makes sense, it's kinda hard to ask the team's #1 guy, who is averaging nearly 1,200 yards a season since he became a starter, to turn over his jersey to someone who has not even made the team yet.
