It's hard to say the Cardinals came out of nowhere to win the NL pennant last year after they'd been in the playoffs three of the previous five seasons, but it wasn't until they finished 2004 with the best record in baseball (and ran away with the NL Central in the process) that people really seemed to start paying attention to them. Now, with Pujols being Pujols, and a good pitching staff FINALLY emrging to support a deadly lineup, I think the Cards have very clearly become the team to beat in the NL and could stay that way for several years.

The Cardinals lineup, I think, still hasn't hit its stride this season. I know it's only May and the Orioles, White Sox and a couple other teams are playing really well while the Yankees and Red Sox are always looming, but I think the Cardinals have to be the favorites at this point to win the big one. I haven't been alive for a St. Louis World Series title (I was born the day after the Cards clinched their last crown; must have been a crazy week for my dad), but I think this year that drought ends.

Also, by most accounts, players love playing in St. Louis, so hopefully that means guys like Pujols and Rolen and Reggie Sanders make a career there and stick around to rebuild the Cardinals dynasty.

Oh it's definatly been nice being a Cardinals fan lately. But then again it's been amazing every year going back to when we got Big Mac. Come to think of it we're pretty lucky all around here in St. Louis. The Rams are slowing down, but have given us a lot of great stuff this decade, the Blues always make the playoffs, and the Cards don't put crappy teams on the field. If only we had the NBA or a decent college football team.

As for Pujols, I sure hope he stays but I don't know that he cares as much about loyalty. He hasn't experienced playing somewhere else so maybe he doesn't think it'll be different from St. Louis. Thankfully he's signed up for a while, but from his last negotiation he asks for what he's worth and expects to get it. I think the only thing we'll need in the next year is an outfielder. Walker is solid, but he's getting old.

Anyway, yeah the pitching has been pretty great. A few of the starters had a rough couple games to start the year but have really come around. The middle relief could use a little help, but they have a few reliable guys.

It would be really fitting for them to make the Series again and win this time, what with it being the last season in the current Busch stadium. Shame it has to go, but the new one looks to be awesome. I think in the NL they can definatly make it there again this year and they are better prepared than last season. They lost Renteria, Matheny and Womack, but they still have the best lineup and they have the starting pitching to keep them in games now.

Most importantly I need them to make it back to make up for last season. My best friend got us tickets for game five of the World Series. I didn't even care if we lost, I just wanted to say I had been to a World Series game. :(

WHERE IS STEVE KLINE WHEN YOU NEED HIM?

Oh god, this bullpen sucks. Kliney's gone. Kiko's Delivery Service left in the Mulder trade. King stands alone from last year, giving him Kline 2003 Syndrome: all the pressure is on him, so he screws up consistently. Izzy is not a guarantee (though no legitimate concerns,) but he needs to stay healthy.

Luckily this team has five solid starters that can get you seven, and the kids in the pen (Jarvis, Flores, etc) will come around to be consistent enough even if they've sucked so far. Everyone keeps underestimating this staff ("Marquis and Suppan will come down to Earth soon.") but it's been fourteen months (real-time, not playing time) so far and no re-entry has been scheduled. These boys are for real.

The offense...let's not discuss that, lest other teams grow jealous. Oh, and thank you, Nunez, but you don't have to be Scott Rolen. That is, we don't mind, but don't feel like you have to wear the 2-7. Or play like you do.

Central's wrapped up, but Atlanta and Florida scare me and let's not forget that L-A is tearing it up WITHOUT The Gagne.

It's funny how we can lose a guy like Rolen for six weeks and it's not hurting us much so far. I heard someone else was injured yesterday though, but I don't know the details. At least it's happening early in the season when we have a lead to work with.

My friends and I discussed Pujols and we think we need a nickname for the guy. He's too good to not have one. I still like A-jols, but I don't know if they would let us carry in a sign. :)

Considering the division, the Cardinals should have a playoff spot wrapped up around the 4th of July. However, getting the 1 seed in the N.L. might be there downfall, as the team that matches up best against them is the Marlins, who very likely will be the wild card and the Cardinals opponents in the NLDS. Last October showed dominant pitching can shut down dominant hitting in a short series.

Just to nitpick, Reggie Sanders is 37. He might retire in St. Louis, though. ;)

Damn I didn't realize he was so old. I knew he was in his 30s, but I though like 30-32. I thought he'd been around for seven or eight years, but it is in fact his fifteenth season.

I'll take what the Cards are getting from him for a couple more years though.
