These last four or five episodes have shown (to me, at least) that claims of the Simpsons jumping the shark have been greatly exaggerated ... but last night's "Catholic vs Protestant" finale was the best of the bunch.
Homer: "I've masterbated about 8 billion times, and have no plans to stop masterbating in the future ... Ha, in your face Lord!"
The show could go on for another 5-10 years if the writers can keep serving up comedy gold like that!

You know, except for the truly horrible Future-Drama episode, it was actually a pretty good season this year. I liked most of the episodes. Sure, it's not good as it once was but for a show going into a 17th season, I think that they still deliver the goods. Personally, I hate to see the day that The Simpsons will die.

I liked the 2nd episode better than the first.
The second was a real good episode, hitting home because they finally got around to doing a Catholic episode. I was waiting til' they made a priest-children joke, and it took longer and wasn't as direct as I expected ("I'll be the worst priest since....well, you know"). And it's true, we do have a lot of pancake dinners/breakfasts!
We had a Medieval Faire in middle school- I wish it was like the one at Springfield Elementary. "You're just like your mother- can't take a punch." Great line. Another one was from the nun- "No prayin' to the condiments." To go with what BWT said, I thought hearing Homer say "masturbate" was weird. I don't think they've said it before. I've always wondered what religion the Simpsons were and now we know- Protestant!

Wasn't the season finale the episode that was originally supposed to air the night after the Pope died? I remember hearing something about a 'Catholic' episode being pulled right around that time.
Whether it was the episode in question or not, that was flat out a fun episode to watch. It seems like in the last few years they've relied on 'wacky misadventures' that are pretty nonsensical, or just random plots thrown together (the Grandpa's funeral planning to tennis court building episode strikes a chord there). We roared through most of that episode last night though, particularly the 'Stand up, sit down, it's like a game of Simon Says with no winners!' line.
