I caught Heat tonight and CM Punk was on the show wrestling Val Venis. They had a really great match. Anyway, Coach and Todd Grisham were talking up CM Punk like he was the greatest thing since sliced bread, mentioning the other times he'd been on Heat and saying how he was the type of guy the company was looking to hire. Coach also mentioned that during the draft maybe RAW and/or Smackdown would be picking up new talent and CM Punk would be one to watch. I hadn't seen anything on the WWE picking him up, but that could be great. The matches I've seen with him have been excellent and his promos and character on MLW before they folded were the height of (unintentional) comedy. Is there any news?

Punk was on Heat a month ago, and Todd and Coach really screwed up the non-WWE guys names. They thought the tag team unit was called C.M. Punk, and though the two guys wrestling were Russell Simpson and Chad Collyer. (Collyer was supposed to be in the match at one point.) Lillian screwed up the introduction, which helped cause the problems. The barest amount of legwork would've gotten the Heat crew the correct names, and someone along the line screwed up. I'm thinking Coach and Todd put him over strongly this time at least partly because they screwed it up so bad last time.

The other mitigating factor is they also ackowledged the background and relative success of the Maximo brothers on Velocity, using the same "succesful on the independent circuit" line. As tough it's to believe the announcers might have been told to give all non-WWE guys a bit more credibilitiy, it's tougher to believe Josh and Todd would have the same thought about it indepedently.

They spent so much of the match talking Punk up, it does seem like there's something more than just a random convergance of unrelated factors. There's been talk going that C.M. Punk wanted to see if he could make it to the WWE now, and they obviously think enough of him to let him wrestler on TV than be a Masters victim.

There's no deal now, but there's enough here to make you wonder if one's coming.

I caught that match and it was really solid. I feel two things coming out of it.

1) WWE needs to sign CM Punk... and use him... correctly. Let him talk, let him do his "straight-edge and better than you gimmick" and let him wrestle.

2) WWE needs to use Val Venis. While the character is stale as all hell, Val could still be useful. He's a really solid worker. Really, I wish they never changed his Chief Morley gimmick which was entertaining and gave the guy some valuable air-time. But I guess the oh-so funny punch line of "So, I'm not fired?", "Nah, you're fired" was just too good to pass up.

Oh, and random question: Would their be any problems as far as the Pepsi tattoo on CM Punk's arm? Could the Pepsi company step in and try to cause some trouble over that? I was just wondering that while watching the match.

Hell, that was added flavor when he feuded all over the indy circuit w/ "Classic" Colt Cabana, whose T-shirt ripped off Coke's Dynamic Ribbon Device (yep, the actual name for the ribbon under the Coke name on the can...weird.) Colt did a spot where he'd give Punk the spit-Coke-in-the-face spot, and Punk sold it like sulfuric acid.

Of course, WWE could always just say it's a yin-yang symbol...or cover it up w/ sleeves. :-)

I'd never seen CM Punk until last night, but I was impressed with the chain wrestling at the beginning of the match. I found myself getting really, really into the match, and I was applauding Vals and CM's efforts at the end of it.

Best moment would have been when CM attacked Val after the handshake. That was funny as hell.

I was surprised to see Punk on since I haven't seen Heat in a couple months. I noticed he's switch from baggy shorts to trunks now too. Punk looked really good in there and it was nice to hear the announcers recognize him and to see it be such an even match. It was a solid match.

Just wondering, someone mentioned the Maximos were on Velocity. Who'd they face? How did that match go?

They were squashed by the Big Show last week. This week, they got beat by the Basham Brothers.
