In case you didn't know Bungie as updated HALO 2 in addition to having new maps available. In case you haven't noticed they have reseted everyones ranking level, and everyone as of yesterday 5/4/05 is now back at level 1. They also state that over time players will now play players on-line who are ranked at the same level or close to them. Sounds great, but until the level 45 people get back to level 45 us who are casual players who were at level 7 are getting our arses handed to us and totally makes the game unfun. My clan doesn't plan on playing again until next week sometime. By then the people who should be ranked at level 45 are again at level 45 and not playing those at level 8 or worse and making the game totally unfun. I was just wondering what others opinions are on this resetting of stats and playing a game against people who are obviously better then you (which is fine) but making the game totally unfun because you don't even have a chance.

Here's more official words...
"Sudden Death has been removed from all Assault variants to prevent griefing. If you think that griefing was a legitimate tactic, you are simply going to have to learn other basic skills. You all knew that doing it was bogus, aggravated the other teams and was fundamentally imbalanced. Did we have any responsibility there? Sure. And we've fixed it. Thing is, we accept all our responsibilities, while griefers continue to defer theirs. Stop cheating, stop griefing, and don't cry about how it's our fault for making it possible. We had issues with our designs that did make it possible, but nobody forced you to exploit them. Especially when other teams DON'T do it. Griefers who complain about OUR responsibility to stop them from cheating should dial 911 and ask for a Waaahmbulance.

Round time for Assault variants has been increased globally to give teams a better chance to score since sudden death is gone. That should mean more epic struggles, and some maps, like Headlong, will become very, very interesting…

…especially since we've removed Banshee from CTF and Assault games on Ascension and Headlong. Why? Because griefers will surf the bomb to unreachable places anyway, just to be jackasses.

No more Plasma Pistol / Battle Rifle ownage in Slayer games on Beaver Creek or Colossus - we now use Human weapon sets for Slayer variants on those two maps. This will be controversial and we understand there is some small skill required to use the combo, but frankly it has become tiresome on those maps. It takes far more skill to win without that combo. More skill = more fun, right?

Motion Detector (radar) has been removed in all head to head playlist variants. This one I'm personally ambivalent about. Partly because of my inability to look at radar while fighting/getting owned. Partly because it sometimes adds a layer of strategy (creeping on objective based games, being a good example) but we hear the thronging masses. Loads of noise demanding its removal and almost total silence on the opposite opinion.

The majority of game variants on Coagulation and Burial mounds will now start players with Battle Rifle and an SMG - exceptions include games such as Team Snipers, Team Rifles or other variants which feature specific weapon sets. THIS one we expect universal approval on. Now that I can actually shoot the Battle Rifle with some modicum of skill, I will be putting it to good use. We've done more palatable Battle Rifle starts on the newer maps too, but since they're not in matchmaking yet, you'll have to take our word for it.

We've added King and Oddball variants to Head to Head to encourage more conflict, less hiding and more variety.

No more Phantoms. You'll have to custom game that one. Phantoms was a rarity anyway. Now it's just super-ultimate-rare. That is to say., gone.

We've added new CTF and Assault variants which feature Covenant vehicles just for variety. The Spectre is making an appearance and should make for some interesting encounters. Shouldn't really change balance too much though. "

Not cheating so much as harrassment, usually committed with the aid of bugs or features that don't work as intended (these would be known as "sploitz").

See, with the sudden death system in place if any member of the assaulting team got near the bomb before a timer of 5 seconds ran out, the timer would reset and only begin to countdown again when all members of said team are killed off by the defenders.

So, say an assaulting team is going to lose the game. They'll take the bomb, hide, and keep the game going forever because the timer won't run out. Thus, griefing the winning team into leaving so that the losers end up winning.

I'm thinking "casual player" and "My clan" are not allowed to apply to the same person.

I am a member of a clan, and by casual I mean we have the oppertunity to play maybe 2-3 times a week based upon our busy schedules. We don't have the luxury of being able to play everyday so therefore I am a casual player. Since I know people play this and other games everyday.

I never have a problem playing with people who are better than me. When I find myself in those situations, it kind of forces myself to get better to try to compete. Even if it is a lost cause, the higher stress causes me to think faster on my feet. I am not one who plays Halo 2 every day but a few times a week for half an hour to an hour. I say you shouldn't take losing so seriously.

One time on team slayer, my team was getting thrashed in the first 3 minutes, causing my whole team to quit. Since I figured I had nothing to lose since I already lost, I persisted on playing in a 1 vs 4. It was irritating to hear the other team telling me to quit but I persevered if they were willing to stay there for my amusement. I got trounced big time, but on occasion I was able to beat others one on one and get their weapon. At one point three of them came charging at me with a rocket launcher, a sword and plasma rifles. A couple of smart frag grenade tosses gave me a triple kill and some deserved gloating on my behalf. In the end I managed 9 kills to their 30 something but I felt I improved a lot for that situation.

June 28 you can buy a disk called Halo Multiplayer Map Pack for $19.99 at retail stores. It will have all 9 maps that will be released on Live so you won't miss out. It will also have some extra video footage of making the new maps.

It's not losing LanceJr is complaining about. I know, I'm part of his clan and I share his grievances. The problem we're having is that with the so-called 'level playing field' that Bungie created, the game isn't fun as it was because it isn't competitive.

One of the selling points of Halo 2 online was that you were matched against players roughly your skill level. There are always going to be players better than you, but it was relatively balanced. Right now, it's all out the window. I don't mind being taunted, I don't mind losing 10 games in a row, I mind not having fun while doing so and getting massacred by players who are way, way better than I am and I shouldn't be facing to begin with. It's a nice thought to say, "Well, I should just try harder." We do. We play our best and get slaughtered by superior players. Losing isn't disheartening, what's disheartening is the quality of the game, it's uneven and unfair right now.

In time things will level out but right now, we're finding the online game to no longer being as fun and competitive as it used to be, that's all.

So I could just invest $19.99 in live and get it anyway?

Umm... X-Box Live costs $49.99 a year, 2 of the new maps are free , but others cost $5.99.

The upgrade disc being released will include the new maps currently available on LIVE, 4 additional new maps(which will also be available for download on LIVE), an animated short from the single-player story in New Mombasa and a mini-documentary that includes interviews with the map designers, combat strategies, and fly-throughs of the new maps.

Hooray. I always loved paying for expansion disks with my computer games. Now I get to do it on my Xbox! Now if they'd only start shipping half-finished games and then later release patches for them over Live, it'll be just like a REAL COMPUTER.

Oh wait, they already did that. Good show, THQ/WWE.

I understand what you're saying and I respect that. I've been in a fair share of matchmade games where I've been trounced and it wasn't fun. But about half the time I do get in some really competitive matches where everyone was on the same skill level.

As for the expansion disks comment, 9 new maps take time and effort to make, so it doesn't bother me that they will charge for it. Halo 2 was a complete product when it shipped. Though Live users can download all the maps for free by the end of summer thanks to a sponsorship by Mountain Dew.

The situation with Wrestlemania 21 is a real travesty and just goes to show that THQ/Jakks should not be holding the WWE license. I hope they lose that lawsuit really soon.
