Just out of curiousity, I'm wondering how widespread celebration of Cinco de Mayo is. Obviously, being in Texas, it's really big here. But, I was wondering if it was as big further to the north. Is it pretty widespread? Or, is it just used by Mexican restaurants to try and pump up sales? Or, is it neither of the above?

Contrary to widespread belief, it's NOT Mexican Independence Day (Sept. 16). Rather, it's when the Mexicans defeated the invading French army, lead by Napoleon III, at the Battle of Puebla. Interestingly enough, it's bigger here in Texas (and probably California, Arizona, New Mexico) than in Mexico (except for Puebla).

As a guy who is a "Theme Drinker," I always celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

It's Corona and Sol today...mint juleps on Saturday.

I got an email from a group of friends encompassing all types of nationalities saying the following:

"On St. Patrick's day we're all Irish, so for Cinco de Mayo we might as well all be Mexican!
We're getting together for Happy Hour & (insert non-Mexican bar/restaurant here) at 7:00, hope to see you there".

So basically, any excuse for New Yorkers to go out & drink, is a widespread celebration!! :-)

Yea, there's a South Florida Sun-Sentinel story (ChiTrib) pointing out, if not explaining, that phenenomen

"We were going to close early but we just had so many [Anglos] coming in all day," said Martinez, who grew up along the U.S. Mexican border but has spent the last 32 years in Florida. "I couldn't believe how busy we were so finally I just asked them: `I didn't know you [Anglos] celebrate Cinco de Mayo?' And they all said yes, it was a good excuse to party and drink beer."

There's a lucha show in Chicago tonight, and one in Detroit this weekend.

Through marketing, I can see it getting as big as St.Patrick's Day, to the point where there will be lineups outside bars and Best Buy flyers telling us to take advantage of the "Cinco de Mayo week sale".

Here in Kansas, there are celebrations all over. Serves a great purpose of getting us WASPs to better understand Hispanic heritage and the foods pretty good too.

Within 20 years it will be bigger than St. Patrick's day, and for all of the wrong reasons.

Mexicans tend to be ambivalent about this holiday (those in Mexico) but people here market it pretty hard. This is going to be ridden harder than Christmas in the next 20 years as Latinos make up a larger portion of the population.

I'm all for embracing Latino traditions, but lets actually pick one to celebrate instead of this one. Still, this is the one they can market, so its the one we will get.

Pieman's behind the times. Here in the South we've been celebrating Tuesday for YEARS.

Tequila for everyone!

I have to admit that this city has a few periods of drunkenness:

-The Christmas/New Year's period
-St. Patrick's Day/Week
-Stampede Week
-Any/All Playoff Games for any sports team

Cinco de Mayo isn't quite as big here as it could be.

According to no less an authority than my Sports Illustrated-golf themed desk calendar, today is also "Holocaust Remembrance Day".

Yom Hashoah is Holocaust Remembrance Day. (Shoah being the Hebrew term for the Holocaust.)
