There's been pressure and financial offers to Marquette University's board for years to restore the "Warriors" moniker...

...that they dropped in 1994 for the more-PC "Golden Eagles."

They've turned it down before, but this time, they finally decided...to scrap "Golden Eagles" and rename themselves the Marquette Gold.

Good discussion here (Chris Creamer's Sports Forums)...this pleased nobody.

Get ready for the Crayola Cup next year, when the Orange and the Gold face off.
As a UW Grad (written in fine print on the back of my diploma it states "Thou shalt not cheer for that school from Milwaukee"), let me say HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
EDIT: Not so fast, my friend. Marquette has now back-pedaled: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/marq/may05/325271.asp

The Marquette "Gold" is out...and an Internet vote (AP) will determine the new name.
The 10 choices and voting date will be announced soon...but "Warriors" will not be one of 'em. No word on whether there'll be a write-in option.
Most folks up here in WI would prefer a return to "Warriors," Kawshen's comments (The W...duh) notwithstanding. Hell, just make the logo and mascot something more generic than an Indian head, and it should be fine, right?
One alum I know suggested a write-in campaign for "Jumpin' Jesuits." Now THAT's comedy...uh, gold. :-)

What did you have in mind? A stylised Animal and Hawk? Or say the pic halfway down this page? (ultimatewarrior.com) | Mr. Boffo

I personally could go for a Samurai Warrior.
Warriors to me is so general to be inoffensive. You have warriors in every culture. You want derogatory, talk about Redskins and Redmen. | ekedolphin

| #7 Posted on 13.5.05 0022.08 Reposted on: 13.5.12 0025.07 | What was wrong with Golden Eagles, anyway? The logo was very generic and boring (reminded me a lot of the old Kent State logo before they got the current, much cooler one), but just change the logo and everything's cool, right?
Warriors is all right, too. I wouldn't return to that old logo, either, but if you ask me they should've kept the Warriors name and changed the logo in the first place. Political correctness run amock. | Sec19Row53

It wasn't "Warriors"
The best idea I've read on this is to just be "Marquette". After all, that's the chant (We are [clap-clap] Marquette [clap-clap]). | orangeman

| #9 Posted on 14.5.05 1105.10 Reposted on: 14.5.12 1106.23 | | When I was at Syracuse, there was discussion of changing to a different mascot like a wolf or an eagle or something. The chancellor put together a group and looked into suggestions. The overwhelming position of the students was leave it alone, because even if an orange is a goofy mascot, he's still our goofy mascot who got KO'd by Charlie Steiner in one of those great Sportscenter commercials. The recent change from Orangemen, or Orangewomen for the ladies' teams, to just plain Orange didn't thrill me but at least we were still orange and could keep Otto as the mascot. | | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
