Oh, man, the closer on this one was unreal. This has to be one of the more dramatic moments this season, complete with the expiration of a likeable character and the continued delving of Jack into his morally ambiguous world. On one hand, it provided some great dramatic material - on the other, well, I am pretty good with suspending disbelief on this show, but what, are there only 4 doctors at CTU?

Regardless, RIP Paul Raines.

Palmer continued to rule ass and make those difficult choices. He was very understanding and sympathetic to President Logan, which surprised me. I honestly thought a pimp-slap would be in order. Anyway, it was also very interesting to see the acknowledgment of Mike's betrayal in Season 2. Palmer was pretty gracious about the whole thing, and I for one am glad that they can work together. The best part about the whole Palmer story, though, was the return of AARON FUCKIN' PIERCE. I love that guy.

I sang the praises of Bill Buchanan last week, and I stand by the assertion that he pretty much kicks ass. I do have to question his motives with Tony, though. I mean, he already backed out once with Michelle, he can't go backing in again, even if Tony's hot little piece (but not as hot as Michelle) is barking on the phone.

I was so hoping that Edgar would put his hand on Chloe's shoulder and say, "I care about you" in what would no doubt be his Barry White seduction attempt. Maybe he'll save her for me. Ah, well...show's gotta have some comedy.

I've also mentioned recently that Chase was supposed to back this episode, that was obviously incorrect. I apologize to any Chase fans...I know you're out there.

Hope no West Coasters come to read this thread -- but then again, it is a discussion thread about this episode.

All I can say is I didn't see that one coming at all. As they cut to Paul in surgery, I asked myself "Wait, doesn't CTU only have the one medical staff?" . . . . and then in comes Jack and the suspect/informant. That entire sequence of events was the first time in ages I've felt numb from watching a TV show. Just . . . making that decision. Wow. The guy saves your life, and you toss him aside just like that. But millions of lives are at stake. But you owe him. *shakes his head*

So let's see. Buchanan's about to throw Tony out. Palmer made a tough call that ended horribly with the Chinese Nationals. Jack's at his most vulnerable. The geek lust tension between Edgar and Chloe is at a boiling point. Michelle's hurt because Tony didn't reveal that he's living with a woman (sorry Yak -- but she was less "hot" and more "Ms. Crabtree from South Park"). Marwan's still building this nuke, which is supposed to launch before dawn on the East Coast which is now one hour away (4am LA time). I'd say things are pretty fuck-ed right now.

One other question: By my count (and tvtome's) this is episode 20, i.e. 4 episodes left. However, the Fox promo at the end said there were only 3 episodes remaining. Is Fox going to air a 2 hour special for the end of the season? If so, that would be awesome -- one less week to wait!

I am assuming so. IIRC, the first four episodes ran concurrently over the course of, well, 24 hours, so a 2 hour season finale is certainly not out of the question, as your math is certainly correct.

Man, this episode was like a backwards Beatles song....Paul Is Dead.

If Palmer was smart, he'd figure out some way to pin the kidnapping on Marwan and his men. Why not? Marwan is apparently capable of anything, so a simple snatch-and-grab wouldn't be too tough.

Dude, I was thinking the same thing.

Have 21 hours already passed? Damn, seems like yesterday we were seeing Behrooz deal with teenage love.

The finale is two hours long. I'd link to the Fox press release, but it contains their previews for all of the remaining eps. Besides, TV seasons that start in fall never go past Memorial Day.

Wow. What a show. That look on Jack's face...wow.

It seems to me that the soul of Sherry Palmer has taken up residence within David. No way David ever approves a covert op that quickly (he was a little hesitant last season when Jack asked about his little mission w/ the Salazars). But he's learned from Sherry - don't think twice about doing what needs to get done, even if you get your hands dirty.

Don't forget that one of the CTU agents at the Chinese consulate was unmasked. He was also bleeding so he's probably left some DNA around, so he can be identified. So while they maybe averted one crisis, they created another.

Fantastic episode.

Audrey has come full-circle. "I hate you, Jack Bauer!" Wow. The fact that a good chunk of preview was Jack standing behind her, wanting to comfort her but knowing she despises him right now - man, that was *powerful*.

This is gonna be a fun wrap-up the next few weeks!

I was waiting for this call to CTU: "Hi, this is Jack Bauer. We're coming in with an injured Chinese national who has very valuable information. Can you make sure a doctor and his staff are waiting? Oh, they're working on someone else? Well, we won't be there for about 15 minutes, so maybe you can scare one up from a local hospital. On account of it might save millions of lives and all." And that's now 2 civilian deaths in the CTU medical wing today, we might need to start looking for a new staff anyway.

Not much Marwan in this episode, I only remember him showing up in the videotape. So he could be between LA and who knows where by now.

Jack has done many things in the past seasons that were forgiven in the whole "best for the country" line. But this season (especially last night) might just get him in some trouble. Besides disobeying a direct order from the Prez, then breaking into the Chinese consulate and kidnapping someone, he also helped kill the son-in-law of the Secretary of Defense. This after holding up a gas station earlier this year. I hope if there's another season, it's not just him sitting in a jail cell for 24 hours.

Good call. Also...(not really spoilers, but...)

...more of a prediction. I have a bad feeling about the future of our bleeding agent, and it involves the words "fall" and "guy." Which leads me to believe how much more interesting it would have been if Curtis was the one unmasked and cut. Maybe the fact that he wasn't implies he'll be back for another season. Who knows.

The situation with Paul, as well as Jack's constant utilization of tactics that are in the country's best interest really amplify an understated aspect of this show: the seemingly unbearable suffering that these people must endure. Everyone on this show that we care about seems to have a huge load on their conscience or a burden of sadness, and it is all related to their jobs.

Take Jack, for instance. His pregnant wife was raped (although he never found out) and killed. He became a heroin addict in the line of duty and was fired for it. He was forced to execute his boss. He has been rendered expendable in numerous situations that nearly led to his death. He was actually killed once (and revived, of course). He was also forced to cut off his partner's hand and has had to make decisions about the deaths of others. I'm sure I'm just scratching the surface with him, as well.

Erin Driscoll lost her daughter. Edgar Stiles lost his mother. At this rate, it looks as if Tony has probably suffered the least, and he lost his job and went to jail. These people are heroic, but the rush of doing such an important job seems to have a huge downside.

Something we didn't see during the third season but they had it on the DVD was a short scene of Jack, after shooting Ryan Chappelle and having his body taken; he get's back in the helicopter. At this point, if I remember right, was where FOX cut it to another scene, but on the DVD, we get to see Jack breakdown and start bawling. He really let the tears flow fo a good minute or so.

While it was quite moving and added a little more depth to his character, I'm glad they didn't show it during the regular season because while it was a good scene, it didn't really fit into the flow of the show and it would have slowed the pace down.

There was also a shot at the end of one season where he get's into his truck at the end of the show and he just starts shaking and crying. I think it was at the end of Season #2, but I'm not sure. Anyways, again, great acting on Keifers part and it really let's see that he isn't just some mad man monster who'll do anything to anyone in the line of duty it it doesn't bother him at all. It does.

Does anyone want a summer season or 24 where we get to see Jack sit by a swimming pool all day or get drunk infront of a television set? I'd love to see this. Maybe have a good solid hour showing him on the crapper and shaving in the morning. When will this poor guy get a day off for christs sake!

The actor who plays Curtis was on the last 24 Inside show, and they asked him what was going on with Behrooz. I wouldn't say it's much of a spoiler, but I'll hide it as such just to err on the side of caution for people who are totally avoiding anything at this late stage.

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
HOST: Where the heck is Behrooz? Are we going to see him again?

ROGER: I can't touch that. (Audience groans.) I can't.

HOST: Aren't you guys wondering about Behrooz?

AUDIENCE: Yes.

ROGER: Ok, I'll hint. At the end of #15, you saw me take off after him. Right?

HOST: Uh-huh.

ROGER: That's all I can say. (Audience laughs.) And then I kind of disappear for #16, #17. It might be one of those changes that happen.

HOST: Well, it's interesting you should say that, and I'm going to skip ahead because I know I have a question that relates exactly to that. Email from Shane in Vancouver. "Some characters seem to disappear for episodes at a time this season, and you were gone from 10pm to Midnight. Was that because of other commitments, or were the writers focusing on other storylines?" And right under that, I actually wrote underneath this, "Behrooz?".

ROGER: Did you? Oh, you're smart. She picked up on all that. See, that's good. I mean, that was part of it, but then they decided to change some things and deal with that at a different time. And so they've done so.

HOST: This is cryptic.

ROGER: They'll deal with it.

IIRC, the scene in which Jack did break down (it was at the end of Season 3) was pretty similar to the deleted scene after Chapelle's execution. I have heard that the producers/powers that be wanted to hold off until Jack went through even MORE to give him his moment of sadness. Man, who wouldn't fall apart after a day like that, though?

Jack does deserve that day off, though. I'll drink to that.

About Behrooz...this is by no means a spoiler, just conjecture on my part...as well as a few other predictions. Bear in mind I have nowhere near the imaginative capabilities of this show's writers.

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
I can totally see Behrooz pardoned at the end of this season, only to be gunned down by Debbie's mom. I can also see the bleeding CTU agent being given up to the Chinese to prevent a war. I also have a feeling Sarah will return and go apeshit on the office, possibly taking out Edgar or Michelle (who fired her). Not spoilers, just guesses.
