I have been informed by several people that Chris Candido passed away Thursday at the age of 33.

Candido, who had been injured at the TNA PPV Sunday, had surgery on his ankle Monday night. It is way too early to speculate on the cause of death, although it had been told to me that he did have a staph infection.

I don't think any of the big sites, like Observer or Torch, have confirmed this yet. However, if true, then it's really sad news.

RIP, Chris Candido

CHRIS CANDIDO PASSES AWAY
By: Bob Ryder
4/29/2005 12:31:56 AM

Chris Candido passed away Thursday night after collapsing earlier in the evening and being rushed to a hospital by ambulance. The cause of death is unknown at this time.

Candido had suffered a serious ankle injury at the Lockdown pay-per-view on Sunday and had surgery to repair the injury on Monday evening. Candido appeared at TNA's iMPACT taping on Tuesday night in Orlando just hours after being released from the hospital.

The news comes as an absolute shock to all of us who have worked with Chris in recent months. On behalf of everyone at 1wrestling.com, our thoughts and prayers are with Tammy and his family and friends.

Sad to hear. RIP.

Holy shit, this is so out of the blue. God damn. I did NOT see that one coming. But, the real asshole in me has only one thought...

TAMMY SYTCH is single! Ya, I know she is all fat now, but I only think of her as she was in the mid 90's.

I hope WWE has one of those memorials to open RAW next week with his pic.

From Meltzer:

Details are still sketchy regarding the death of Chris Candito (Chris Candido) earlier today at the age of 33.

There are conflicting reports regarding the cause of death, and the police in Matawan, NJ, where he lives, were not able to confirm his death.

Well, damn. Just like that outta the blue he checks out. I'm beginning to wonder if it had anything to do with complications from his surgery or something. It did seem like he was finally clean and getting his life back together.

I think Candido was at his best when he was a member of the Triple Threat in ECW with Bam-Bam and Shane Douglas; along with the program he had with Lance Storm trying to get him in the Triple Threat and they ended up tagging and became the tag champs that hated each other (IIRC).

First thought that hit me (after the obvious "ah shit, no") was it seems almost unfair that Candido was up and then was down with his personal demons, then managed to combat them, get his life in order, be able to resurrect himself and then something like this happens.

If this had to do with the staph infection, it may actually be relieving compared to the other possibilities of wrestling-related deaths. Still, regardless, a guy with an active role in the industry and weekly(?) television presence checking out is a scary thing. I don't see how ankle surgery could possibly have this kind of complication, so the important thing is that the facts come out and we see what we can learn from this.

Regardless of what turns out to be the cause, it's sad. I wasn't a really big fan, but I was just thinking before I came on here about how people seem to assume life is endless. It's really not. Do what you need to do, because you never know how long you've got.

Johnny Candido's stated it's over a complication from the surgery. It makes me think:

-Are the doctors liable, if this is the case?

and

-How sad that Chris Candido conquered his demons and was on the verge of resurrecting his career before this happened.

I found about this overnight Friday after ACW-NWA WI's promoter, Jason Jerry, called me with the news. He said the cause of death was a blood clot, due to complications from his surgery. (He was apparently getting some sort of a plate put into his broken ankle.)

That's confirmed in this statement (Lords of Pain) from Candido's brother Johnny.

We had the pleasure of working with Candido for a couple of matches in ACW-NWA WI last year. I remember him complimenting me on my karaoke skills at one of our post-match parties...that's stuck with me ever since.

Geez, first my mom, now a wrestler I always respected. This death thing sucks.

God rest your soul, Chris Candido...and thank you for the memories. You'll be missed.

Probably not. Certainly not if it were in the UK. Deep Vein Thrombosis and consequent pulmonary embolism is a risk that you understand you are taking when you sign the consent. I had similar surgery 13 mnonths ago.

Geez, that just sucks.

I just read a review of a shoot interview he did, maybe in the last two weeks or so. According to this, he had owned up to all his past demons and was ready to get his career going again.

What an underrated guy, even going back to his SMW days as the chickenshit heel.

Just terrible, terrible news.

I wasn't able to see much of Candido once he left the WWE, but what I did see suggested he had a ton of potential even without Sunny drawing the spotlight to him. It's a loss made harder to deal with given its sudden nature.

I always thought he was a great promo guy, and here's my favorite one, taken from an ECW PPV, where he was standing with Tammy Sytch:

"You're looking at the finest piece of ass in all of wrestling! Oh yeah, Tammy's here too."

I think it should be noted that they talked about Candido on Between the Ropes this week, and said that after his surgery he REFUSED to stay at the hospital overnight because he did not want pain killers because of his past drug problems and he was afraid if he stayed there the temptation would be too strong. Not only that but he showed up for the TNA tapings the next day and even got involved with the match. It's sad to see a guy who had finally got his life back in order and obviously loved the business so much.

Candido was at this weeks TNA TV tapings, and was in The Naturals corner for their match.

Due to his death, TNA has pulled the episode and replaced it with a re-airing of last weeks.

R.I.P. Chris Candido. Hopefully you cleaned up you life enough to earn a place in the great arena in the sky.

A snippet from Meltz's update today ...

Candido's last pro wrestling appearance will air today on the TNA Impact show. I'm told they will do a tribute graphic for him on the show, I believe at both the beginning and the end of the show. Before the show started, Candido came up with his own angle, because in a cruel twist of irony, he had been in a wheelchair at a ruse for the last few weeks on television. Candido came up with the storyline that his real broken leg on Sunday was his karma for the ruse, which led to the tag team title change and what was told to me was the best Impact match in a long time. There was debate whether the match should air at all. Shane Douglas who was his best friend in the company, felt 100% certain Candido would have wanted it to air. So that was the decision.

I was really starting to dig him in TNA. He seemed to know his role and was giving a veteran rub to the Naturals. Such a sad thing.

Not on Fox sports Cincinatti - he dominated the last half of the show. It was great to see his last effort. He didn't take a bump, but interferred. Did look like he was in pain tho..
