Heard about this on the radio, and I thought for sure that it was a Photoshop joke. Being local, it was pretty easy to verify (by the radio station) that it was, in fact, real.

Looks like the dream of Aztlan is becoming more and more real everyday, while we do nothing about it...

I don't get the big deal. It's an advertising gimmick by a TV station. It has nothing to do with immigration.

Congratulations, this is the dumbest and most blown out of proportion post I've read today.

It's an ad for a Spanish language newscast. That's it. ClearChannel owns the billboard, whoopity-shit. ClearChannel owns LOTS of billboards.

When I lived down there, KRCA was a Home Shopping Network affiliate and thus, a deathly boring channel to watch when all you could pull down on the dorms were UHF stations. Hell, it was probably even MORE offensive than a "Noticias" containing (gasp) news orginating in Mexico!

But don't let me stop you from picketing...what, the billboard? Mexicans? Anything to get you away from the keyboard...

And what would you have us do? Seriously. Since this is apparently such a horrible thing _ OH NO THE MEXICANS ARE COMING HIDE THE GOOD SILVERWARE MABEL!!! _ what's your idea for making it all better? And remember, before you say "close the border and shoot anyone that comes within 500 yards of it" that this country was founded on the belief that anybody could come here and make a better life for themselves.

Maybe I'm overreacting to your post, but I'm really getting sick of this attitude where people FREAK OUT any time a company does something to reach out to the Hispanic community. There's a whole heckuva lot of Hispanic people living in the U.S. right now, and it certainly makes good business sense for Clear Channel _ or any other company _ to do what they can to appeal to that market.

There's been a big influx of Hispanics _ mostly Mexicans _ here in Ohio recently and quite frankly, the vast majority of them come here, bust their asses non-stop and do a better job of being involved in the community and doing something to improve their station in life than people who have lived here all along. So forgive me for looking at your post _ with the oh-so-scary Ellipsis of Doom _ and thinking "Wow. What a closed-minded attitude" and not "Now where did I put my gun and year's supply of canned goods?"

I'm pissed, if only for the fact that whoever designed the billboard should have made the anchors and the Noticias 62 more prominent.

Billboard must have worked, though, if it got people's panties in a bunch.

Congratulations, this is the dumbest and most blown out of proportion post I've read today.

If you're looking to top it, you should head over to the website of the group (Americans for Legal Immigration) that is trying to get everyone all fired up. They have a bulletin board where their members are discussing the topic. If you're looking to reduce your brain cell count, you can find the board at http://www.alipac.us/ftopict-2118.html

The funniest part is where they're trying to translate 'Tu ciudad, Tu Equipo.' The ciudad part didn't pose a problem, but they haven't figured out definitively what 'equipo' means. They're having a hard time figuring out if it means 'news' or 'equipment' or 'team.' I liked it best when they thought it meant equipment. In fact, I have a new sig.

I would expect more from CRZ having LIVED in southern California, but this sign is all about attitude. There is an actual, significant part of the population here who is said to believe that this is supposed to be part of Mexico. There are people who say that Mexico is actively encouraging it's people to cross the border illegally, and even some who say that this is a long-term plan to supplant the population here with Mexico's. Even if you think the latter is a whacked out concept, don't you think this is an indication of the attitude of the people here who don't speak English (and thus not assimilating?)

CRZ got the hell out of here. He isn't alone. All population stats for southern California show a population DECREASE amongst citizens. Funny thing too - more people are leaving California from other states than are coming in from other states, but the population is still growing at a staggering rate. And birth rates aren't high enough to account for it.

You ca;; if blown out of proportion, I call it a symptom of a larger problem. Maybe you forgot the ridiculous traffic brought on, in part, by illegal aliens. The lack of low wage jobs. The emergency room closures, from such aliens who would come in to treat everything from a cold to a broken leg. 8 ERs in a year too! Na - no big deal at all.

This sign, by itself? Not a big deal. But it represents an attitude that I think really is a big deal. But hell CRZ, you took probably the smarter route and bailed the hell out of the state. Don't blame you - but you should still remember enough to see the problem for what it is.

Jesus, dude, you sound terrifyingly paranoid. Sentences like those last two, with the delightfully dehumanising use of the word "aliens", should only be uttered by those wearing huge 80s shades, chewing a big ol' wad of gum and carrying a rifle.

Oh, and...

"But hell CRZ, you took probably the smarter route and bailed the hell out of the state."

I'm sorry, did I miss the special bulletin where CRZ announced that he departed Cali coz of all dem Mexicans?

Yeah, you need to adjust yours.

I didn't "get the hell out" of Riverside... I *graduated* and moved back in with my parents. Most of the SoCal natives I knew were reasonably mellow people - I don't think this has changed.

There is an actual, significant part of the population here who is said to believe that this is supposed to be part of Mexico.
Yeah, and apparently they're all dumb white guys with nothing better to form a conspiracy theory around, apparently. If they decide to move because of that, God love 'em for making an ignorant choice, but that CERTAINLY doesn't mean their beliefs are any more true just because they ACTED on that belief.

...you should still remember enough to see the problem for what it is.
Funny, I was thinking the same thing, but not about me.

Please...take this crap to some other board where it won't piss ME off.

Hmm. And I see your inability to disagree with anyone's point of view without being a pretentious ass hasn't changed much either.

Maybe I will take your advice, and give you one more reason to wonder why people aren't coming to your site as much as they used to anymore...

I have no problem with people who come here legally. And this isn't a "human" issue. If you want to disagree that illegal immigration is a problem, fine - debate it. But to ignore it, to minimize it by saying that it is just a bunch of ignorant white people who think it is a problem is naive in the extreme.

It would seem, however, that my point of view isn't welcome here, so I won't waste time debating it. How you expect to even have a politics forum by censoring other people's opinions is beyond me. Is it any wonder this part of the site is such a vacuum lately? Maybe you should just close it - it is clear you want to. Better to close it than to bother with the farce. Since you don't even WANT the forum, and you censor everything right of John McCain, why bother?

You came on here and used a radio station billboard, a fucking BILLBOARD, as a flimsy jumping-off point for rhetoric against a whole ethnic group. You brought no facts, no figures, nothing beyond a photo of an advertisement and a cryptic reference, and you expect people to take your opinion seriously? You want to debate illegal immigration? Fine. As Dolores Landingham once said, show me numbers. Don't come blundering in here with borderline-racist, reactionary exclusionist nonsense and then CRY when people get in your face about it.

Oh, and learn the proper meaning of the word "pretentious", for the love of GOD.

Did I ever attack a WHOLE ethnic group? Did I ever say "Gee golly, I hate Mexicans?"

No. I have a problem with people who come into this country illegally. Be they Mexican, Eastern European, or Asian. This is not a racial issue, this is a legal one. It just so happens that here, 90% of all illegal aliens HAPPEN to be Mexican. You are the one turning it into a racial issue. Any Mexican who wants to come to this country legally - welcome to the United States.

I don't care what skin color dominates the population. We have immigration controls for a reason though, and that fact that people like you can't argue this point without turning it into a racial issue is the biggest tragedy of all.

pretentious (pr-tnshs)
adj.
Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.
Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious.

Yup - pretty much how I meant it. Maybe it is you who needs to read up?

Perspective, Craig.

Maybe I will take your advice, and give you one more reason to wonder why people aren't coming to your site as much as they used to anymore...
Certain people still come here too much, but overall our hits are up comparing April vs. March. I cannot explain why. I can't say it's a big concern to me - or, apparently, as big a concern as it is to you.

...saying that it is just a bunch of ignorant white people who think it is a problem is naive in the extreme.
I probably wasn't clear. I apologise.

Ignorant white people see THAT BILLBOARD as a problem.

It would seem, however, that my point of view isn't welcome here
Now you're on the trolley!

so I won't waste time debating it.

You know, you have to REALLY annoy me to get me to the "censor" level. I can count on one hand - maybe one hand plus one finger - the people who have done this. For the record, it's about a 50/50 split between "lefty" and "righty."

Posting is not the same as debating. I think there is a big difference between defending your position as a non-racial one and defending the merits of the position itself - these are two separate things.

And censoring a position can be more than deleting the post. When you come in and attack a poster for being "moronic" in your opinion, acting in a fashion that would have earned any other poster a warning or a ban of some kind, that is censoring too. But hey - you can of course censor on your board all you want. I just have to wonder why you even bother having a debate oriented forum if you are going to censor/"dismiss" (like that word better?) any belief that doesn't fall into your personal range of belief. Someone advocating something radical and hostile, like "rounding up all the darkies" then great - delete away.

You are RIGHT. In-of itself, this billboard is no big deal. The billboard itself is not a problem, it is a symptom of the larger problem. We have a huge population within this area that is made up of illegal who are a drain on public services, and doesn't wish to assimilate into our culture at all. Who view this as their rightful land (if you believe that groups like MECCHA represent a lot of them, and when our own Lt. Governor is a former member, that isn't too hard to believe). It is a symptom of a larger problem that a billboard crossing out California and writing Mexico is an ad tactic that people believe actually would speak to a large enough number of people to make it worth doing.

As to stats - I am honestly surprised they were needed, seeing how publicized this issue is. Between articles in time and the focus on the Minute-Man project, I thought it was all pretty well documented. If you need then, then I will put them together. Sorry I didn't include them before - I honestly thought the figures were common knowledge. Part of living in this area, I guess.

Yes, I have posted several times in this thread, but I have been challenged directly and I seem to be the only one on this side of the fence. I believe those to be extenuating circumstances.

I find it sad that that group seems to be based in North Carolina. Anyway, from the ALI Forums:

It has been confirmed that Clear Channel does own the billboard. However, the reason CA is crossed out is this is an ad for a news show for the Hispanic market with news from Mexico. Instead of LA or local news, it is news from "home".. MX.

Admittedly, without this piece of info, the billboard is quite confusing and even alarming.

I just find it funny that so many people are willing to jump to saying "This billboard is a declaration of war!" when in all probability everyone involved in its creation are American citizens and not illegal immigrants.

People are not leaving Southern California. And if they are, it's because the housing market is so inflated that selling now makes sense. They can get a huge place in another state for half the price of their 3 bedroom, single story home.

And in spite of the cost, the development in Orange County and Riverside has EXPLODED. The area in and around Temecula is planning 35,000 more homes over the next few years. Were not talking low income family homes. Were talking the same $500,000+ suburban sprawl that's everywhere else.

I still don't get what's so alarming about "Los Angeles, Mexico." LA is never going to become part of Mexico again, no matter how many Mexicans live there. Actually, that's probably why the people who made the billboard thought no one would take it the wrong way, because it's such a ridiculous notion.
