Now THAT'S addictive. I can follow the train tracks by house over to my mom's house two hours away!

Mapquest had a satellite feature, but they removed it a few years ago. Or I never figured out how to find it again.

I miss playing around with it.

What's scary is that if we can access this for free on Google, then I don't even want to imagine what kind of surveillance technologies the government has access to!!

With each passing day, I'm more & more convinced that Gene Hackman's lifestyle in "Enemy of the State" is the way to go... :-)

It's not THAT scary. My house is two years old, and it's not even on the satellite image. If they had my house as it is NOW, I might think it a little bit spooky.

I've been able to guess that the MD/DC area pics are at least three years old.

The Rt 29 & Randolph Rd intersection in Silver Spring is in it's old configuration with construction just beginning for the overpass. They started that back in 2001.

I concluded the Miami ones are from late 2002/early 2003, thanks to:

1) There are some apartment buildings by where I used to live that have been since knocked down that are in the picture.

2) Looking at Dolphins Stadium, the end zones read IOWA and USC, which was the Orange Bowl that year.

It's at least 3 years old for my neck of the woods since you can still see my neighbor's old house that has since been knocked down.

It actually looks like the Manhattan map is older than 2001, & they overlaid a newer image over downtown. The coloring on the area affected on 9/11 seems "brighter" than the rest of the City...

That just means there was less cloud cover the day the satellite took that picture!

So, I'm messing with Google's satellite maps, just looking for cool things to look at, when it occurs to me - ballparks are cool things to look at from high above. So, I made a list.

AL East
Camden Yards
Fenway Park
Yankee Stadium
Tropicana Dome
Skydome

AL Central
U.S. Cellular Field
Jacobs Field
Comerica Park
Kauffman Field
The Metrodome
(left side of Minneapolis was coming up oddly)

AL West
Angel Stadium of Anaheim - is there a motorcross event going on?
McAfee Coliseum
Safeco Field
Ameriquest Field in Arlington

NL East
Turner Field
Dolphins Stadium
Shea Stadium
Citizens Bank Park - picture is noticably old; lookat the not-build park.
Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium - very bright compared to the area

NL Central
Wrigley Field
Great American Ballpark - no map
Minute Maid Park
Miller Park - no map
PNC Park at North Shore
Busch Stadium

NL West
Bank One Ballpark
Coors Field
Dodgers Stadium
Petco Park - no centerfield wall yet
SBC Park - seems goofy to have an island of parking lots

Those which just have parking lots for neighbors seem sad and lonely.

Other places

Olympic Stadium - Montreal

RCA Dome - domes are very boring to look at; that's the AAA Indy Indians ballpark to the left.

Elfstrom Stadium (Kane County Cougars)

Gateway Arch - this works better than I thought it would, because of the shadow.

Grant Park. The softball diamonds a bit south from here look neater, actually.

I have a website. It's kinda neat. Occassionally.

Woohoo! I hope it would just like Google's, because then they would never find me! Even with the 4-digit addon to the zip code, they still have my house in the wrong town. Nor do they have our local arena, which has been opened since 1999. That whole area has been redeveloped in the last 6 years but the map still has it as a giant green area with no zoom available. The resolution on those ballparks and in some of the bigger cities is amazing, though. It's pretty cool to combine this with driving directions and have the false sense of security that one might never get lost again.

Wow. The Vet is still up, and neither CBP nor Lincoln Financial have been built.

This is pretty cool, but not that big an improvement over microsoft's TerraServer site. I recall looking at this site

http://terraserver.microsoft.com

several years ago (Before my Dad had his stroke, at least 5 years) and we could see the doghouses and garden in the backyard.

I have used these images when checking out vacation rental property. If the listings are recent you can figure out how far it is to Walmart, the highway exit, or even just to the community pool.

Did anyone else have trouble trying to locate Disneyworld - I wonder if the images are protected somehow?

The Grand Canyon, or Sonoma Valley would also be neat to see from higher up.

I remember finding Disney World on Terra Server before.
It was kind of sad and ruined the "magic" to see employees' cars parked right behind the buildings on Main St. USA and stuff. Disney goes to great lengths to hide the "backstage" stuff from the public, so I wouldn't be surprised if they blocked the view somehow.

I spent three hours straight at this site. Simply put: wow!

I'm impressed by the accuracy of the Google Maps site. I mean...even for Canadian addresses. I tried my old house in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada....and the marker landed about six to eight houses away.

Funny how some cities are covered beautifully (like Toronto) but some suburbs (like West Valley City, Utah...which is near Salt Lake City) aren't.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this service develops in the future.

EDIT: The Terraserver site pinpointed the exact address I was looking for. Wow!
