Well, this might be the only time this year the Tampa logo gets used. The first idiot to get the 10 day suspension for violating a steroid policy that an untrained chimp could beat is Alex Sanchez of Your Tampa Bay Devil Rays. www.espn.com.
Sadly I actually thought Boston should have gone after him as a fifth outfielder after the Tigers cut him. Then again, if someone hit over .300 for Detroit and then gets cut, the warning signs should be flashing. But, at least playing for Tampa, Sanchez won't come back from his 10 day suspension facing harsh reactions from the crowd. Oh wait, 10 days into the season Tampa plays the Red Sox. Enjoy the 'You Use Steroids' chants.

Shhh. This is all part of Lou's diabolical plan to get the D-Rays over .500 this season. The reason why this was step one is because none of you expected it.

Okay, I give. I can't do it. The sad thing about the D-Rays is that even the few Tampa Bay Homers can't psyche themselves into believing statements like the one above. I really wish someone would try, though. I'd enjoy the sports page a hell of a lot more.

Heard on ESPN the guy lead the league in bunt singles. Sounds like a steroid abuser to me!

This smells.

It may not even be steroids.

I believe the technical term for this is the Jim Miller Defense (cracksmoker.com)

Has MLB released a list of what the banned performance enhancing substances are? I found a partial list which includes:
All steroids, steroid precursors, ephedra, human growth hormone and diuretics and other masking agents.

Do the players even have a list of what all the banned substances are? I mean, "Diuretics" is a pretty vague classification of substances.

I'm just curious how possible it would be for someone like, me: who takes a number of different medications, vitamins, and suppliments (including energy drinks) to test positive for a banned substance.

Instead of a list of BANNED substancs, MLB needs to give every player a list of APPROVED suplements, medications, drinks, etc, and force the teams to provide only APPROVED items to all players. Then, there is absolutely no excuse if a player tests positive.

There's actually a PDF of the agreement - though the earlier "10 days OR $10,000" version - out on findlaw.com. In there, they break down the individual drugs (with clauses to add others if needed). With a few typos and hidden because I figure they're spam attractors, here's the complete list.

EDIT: In this case, Will Carroll (BaseballProspectus - sub required) says it was a Schedule III Steroid (see link; enough bad chem typing.) Milkshake defense seems unlikely.

Yeah, if he tested for a type III, it probably isn't suppliments. However, I believe there is a policy in place which prevents MLB from disclosing what substances players test positive for, and since I am not a subscriber I'm not sure why he would have that info if MLB isn't releasing it.

Well, one guy was an Aussie (Innocent of course)
http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,12782091-23218,00.html
"AUSTRALIAN baseball player Damian Moss has pleaded his innocence after receiving a 15-game suspension for failing a drug test."
""It's a big misunderstanding," Moss told Melbourne radio Sport 927 today.

"I was taking supplements that you can buy over the counter at any health-food store like creatines. I didn't take anything illegal.""

I guess I would just like to see a journalist with an expense account and wide publication to find out what over the counter stuff these guys are taking, and in what combination. There are a number of different things that while they wouldn't contain banned substances as ingredients its possible that two or more ingredients either in one product or multiple products when ingested together will form a similar or identical chemical when metabolized.

I'm not saying I think all these guys are innocent, I just find a few things a bit confusing about the policy and what exactly is being tested for this year.

cubsfan's list and link are helpful, but unless I'm reading the 2005 MLB press releases wrong (possible) this years standards are even more stringent than that (and DO include hgh and the other previously undetected chemicals).

Getting non-professional athletes to take these supplements in various normal player combinations and have them tested both by MLB and an independent lab based on the current policy would in the very least get positive testing players to stop using it as an excuse.

The rest of that guy's story was something to the effect of "I'm not going to say what it was, though, because I don't want to get the companies in trouble." Riiiiiiiiiight. He didn't want to talk about the past, only the future.

When'd he buy them, last year? If I'm correct, GNC's taken those sorts of substances (andro and a number of other prohormones) off the market for a few months now.
