| #2 Posted on 28.3.05 0959.38 Reposted on: 28.3.12 1002.54 | Our mens' team doesn't 'suck so much.' They lost in Mexico City, at 7200' with ungodly pollution and 110,000+ screaming fans going absolutely nuts (on Easter, no less). I have been to Mexico City many times; you get winded very quickly and your eyes burn for a few days, until you get acclimated. Moreover, because of club commitments and travel, the team doesn't have the opportunity to stay in the city for the time it would take to get acclimated. Also, Mexico is 54-1-4 at home in World Cup qualifiers, and their team is pretty damned good so it's not some national disgrace to lose to the Tri there. Of course, if the Mexicans had lost to the U.S. in Estadio Azteca, I can only imagine the reaction in Mexico. Suffice to say, the Mexican team had a hell of a lot more to play for, and it showed.
I don't think anyone who seriously follows soccer/futbol was suprised by the outcome. OTOH, if the U.S. loses at home to Guatemala on Wednesday, that would be bad. | JayJayDean

FIFA has Mexico ranked #6 and the USA ranked #10. In most sports the #10 team losing at the #6 team isn't the end of the world. | StaggerLee

Aren't you kind of leaving out that there could've been a much larger margin, though? From all I've read, Kamarenko was brilliant in net for the visitors, and even then England had a lot of chance that were close but missed.
Poland beat those guys 8-0 last week. It's not THAT close. | dMr

The gap is closing between the smaller nations and the established powers now though, if only because many of them are becoming more adept at sticking ten men behind the ball and frustrating the living hell out of the opposition. Heck its not that long ago that the US were considered a relative non-entity in the soccer world.
And StagerLee, I object strongly to the use of 'crap' in conjunction with any nation other than my beloved Scotland, who pretty much have the copyrights to that particular attitude.
