NEW YORK -- The NHL canceled its draft Thursday, the latest casualty of the six-month lockout.

The annual event had been scheduled for June 25-26 in Ottawa, but it was scrapped along with the entire 2004-05 season that was called off Feb. 16.

The league should have to make all the draftees free agents. Instead, they're stuck waiting, and, since they're not part of the player's union yet, it's not even their fault.

I actually heard about this mainly a professional wrestling fan I don't watch many real sports. Yet, I have to say, Hockey was one that I occationally got into when I could watch one of the games. So, I see, the rudder is still stuck in the mud here. Sad, really sad.

Who would've had the #1 pick (i.e. Sidney Crosby) had a draft taken place?

Since there was no season and subsequently no win/loss records, they couldn't use that to determine draft order. I suppose they could've gone back to the records from the year before unless they had something else in mind.

They were talking about using a weighted lottery using the 2003-04 season records.

Yeah, Washington was really hoping for the chance to get consecutive first round picks, I hear.

They'd better figure something out that isn't the same as the 2003-04 records. A lot of other teams have lost/will lose players, so every team should have a chance. Not an equal chance, mind you, so a weighted lottery sounds like a good compromise.
