The only thing that I could think of that the Military could gain by fabricating the hole in the ground story, would be to try and paint Saddam as a coward among those who still support him.

As for the soldier, what would be his motivation to lie about this?

Things like this make my head hurt.

I guess they wanted to portray Saddam as, I dunno...hitting rock bottom? After all those years of being king of his world, he was forced to hide out in a hole.

Always interesting how issues come out. The guy says a marine of Sudanese descent was KIA.

Just did a little research at

The only military noted as being killed on Dec 12, 2003 are
Jarrod Black, of Peru, Indiana and Jeffrey Braun of Stafford, CT. None are listed KIA on the 13th. On the 14th, two were killed, one was a female and the other was clearly in the Army (they don't have Specialists in the Corps)

Black was Army, according to

so was Braun - according to

and was of Honduran descent.

Maybe this guy is full of it.

(and with regard to his motivation - did you see where the story was quoted from and where the guy now lives?)

When Saddam was initially captured, I saw a few stories that Kurdish forces had captured him and alerted the US Military, who then drugged him and staged the whole "spider-hole" thing. Never saw anybody follow up on those stories, though.

"As for the soldier, what would be his motivation to lie about this?"

Now you know who he is.

Now he becomes an instant talk-show and interview celebrity.

Now he becomes the hero of everyone trying to paint the US action in Iraq in any bad light possible.

There are probably a few more....
