Thankfully, we are at the last two performance-episode week of "Idol". Ryan apparently only has one pair of jeans, and he busts them out again this week while upgrading to a dress shirt from his uber-tight T-shirts, which is nice. Simon takes a minute before the performances start to throw Joe Murena under the bus for saying a lack of airtime in the early episodes led to his early demise, noting that Kelly was hardly on the show at all until they got down to the final ten. He reminds us that it's a "singing competition", while failing to enlighten us as to how Janay is still there on the girls' side. Ryan also asks Paula if she's got her favorite, to which Simon sneaks in a "*cough*Anwar*cough*." Cute.

Scott Savol starts off with a nice little rendition of "I Can't Help Myself". Scott's a Taurus, as they have COMPLETELY run dry of themes for the pre-performance interview clip, apparently. Mine would go like "I'm a Capricorn. That means I was born in January." Good Lord. As show openers go, he's pretty good, and it's good to see him to a more upbeat song. He DID kind of seem lik ehe was half-a-note behind the music, but he always caught up with it from line-to-line. It's hard to imagine that six guys will be better than him this week, especially with Dead Men Walking Travis and Constantine still in the group. Simon rips his MOVES, while completely ignoring how he sounded, which to me comes off like Simon's trying to get America not to vote for the fat guy.

Bo Bice follows Scott with Edwin McCain's "I'll Be". Mrs. JJD and I once saw Edwin McCain on ethe KISS 106.1 Stage at the "Bite of Seattle", right after "I'll Be" blew up, and he was really good, so we bought "Misguided Roses" and after a week of listening to it, we were skipping "I'll Be" and listening to the rest of the CD. Also, he was damn funny, too, so we knew that before he was ever on "I Love the 80s". This isn't Bo's best performance, but he's still pretty good, and it's cool that he changed it up before he was forced to on some theme week. (Mrs. JJD: "That guy ROCKS.") Randy tells Bo he should growl, but that isn't a growler-type of song, while Simon tells Bo he thinks it's his competition to lose at this point. Heady stuff. Ryan gets Bo to admit that he's performed the song at a wedding "or ten". Figures.

"Uh oh" for Anthony Fedorov, in the unenviable position of following Bo, and he goes with a more upbeat song this week with "I've Got You". It's Sergei's best performance since they cut down to 24, and his tracheotomy scar minds its business as well and isn't so distracting this week. It was bugging me trying to figure out exactly who he sounded like this week, and Mrs. JJD suggested Ricky Martin, which I didn't agree with, then Marc Anthony, who I did agree with. Of course, it's actually a Marc Anthony-song, so maybe it was just a good impression, who's to say? Simon AGAIN doesn't give any constructive feedback, so now I'm thinking he can't wait for Scott and Sergei to go buh-bye, although his line about Sergei being as "Latin as a polar bear" was pretty clever.

Nikko Smith starts slow (showing signs of the "Anwar Syndrome") with "Georgia on my Mind", but REALLY closes out the song impressively with the most vocally powerful twenty seconds of the show so far, which Simon likely correctly predicts will get him through to next week on its own. I actually thought the first three verses would have been better had, say, Bo growled his way through them, since he would've made the song more his own than Ozzie Jr. did, but the last verse, WOW! I didn't know the boy had it in him, and he, like Anwar, needs to sing more strongly EVERY time.

Too bad for Travis Tucker he's got to follow THAT. "Every Little Step"? Really? They said he was doing a Bobby Brown song, but THAT one? Whatever. This was disappointing in that Bobby didn't come out for the crowd and do a run-in. Not good. If Travis had Scott's voice, he'd probably win the whole darn thing, but he's got his own voice, so I'd say he's done like dinner. Simon finds his fastball here, calling it "appalling", while Randy gives him an "A" for performance, and a "D" for vocals.

Before we go to Mario, we chat with Constantine in the Red Room. Apparently the guys in the band have gotten over him dumping them to pursue his "Idol" dreams, and they're giving him good feedback on his performances. I think it's because they want him to NEVER COME BACK to the band. That's GOT to be the reason.

Mario Vazquez is a Gemini, which means he's "got two sides". (Translation: I'm BI.) He is in a great spot following Travis, as he can't help but sound good by comparison, and Son of Guarini comes through with "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" I really, REALLY don't want to like this guy, but this was pretty good and he DOES deserve to be in the final 12. I'll be happy when he's gone, though. Make it SOON, America.

Constantine Maroulis follows Mario with, *groan*, "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", at about 0.9 on the Stappmeter. Just pick a Creed song, ferchrissakes. Constantine is SUCH a one-trick pony. If you'd watched this show with someone who had never seen these guys, you'd have to explain Bo's Allman Brothers-song performance from last week to get them to understand it, because it was really different than this week's performance. CM just makes every song sound exactly the same, and not in a good way. He even managed to work in a tiny scream, not being able to keep away from going there. Mrs. JJD said it wasn't bad, so maybe I'm just being overly harsh because I'm a big fan of The Police, like when she rips on one of the girls for butchering one of her faves, but I'm with Simon on this one, who calls it a "bad impersonation of Sting", and telling Randy and Paula they've both "lost the plot" for even remotely liking it.

Mrs JJD, during the break: "You'd BETTER put something in there about these fucking shitty commercials with that STUPID Ashlee Simpson song. Although, it's ironic that they put them on during a singing competition-show, like 'see how much she sucks.'" You're welcome.

Anwar gets to close the show, and he goes with "Wonderful World". As is his custom he starts out a little slow, but he kicks into gear about the third line in and goes OFF, which is exactly what I've been saying would happen if he just sang the whole song strongly. It's a brilliant performance, and Randy gives him a standing "O". I think he'll get through a future off-week if America remembers this, but he's probably this year's LaToya London, quite strong, possibly the best singer, but not charismatic to win the whole thing.

After this week, I'd put Constantine and Travis in a tag team and dub them "Foregone Conclusion". I guess MAYBE either of them could get through at Scott or Sergei's expense and I wouldn't be shocked, but it wouldn't be right if wither of those guys made it to the final 12.

I think JJD pretty much nails this show with this recap.

I really, really think Simon wants Savol and Fedorov gone. I, on the other hand, do not. I am with JJD in thinking that Constantine and Travis NEED to go home.

My wife convinced me for the first time this season that we needed to vote. She said if we didn't, Scott Savol was going home. So I complied. But his line was really, really busy. So I switched over to voting for Anwar a whole bunch of times (whose line was not so busy). I hope that's not a sign. I did get through a few times to vote for Savol, so if he goes home tomorrow, it's not on me.

Anwar is so much the best singer in this group, it's not even funny.

As an aside, I was getting my hair cut yesterday and I go to the local salon next to where I work. My stylist (shut up, you) is a gay man and watches this show. He absolutely HATES Mario. My wife HATES Mario. So, my followup question is: who is voting for this guy? Forty year old women aren't voting for him. Gay men aren't voting for him. Who the hell is voting for this cross between Justin Guarini and Adrian Monk?? WHO??

From last night, and to the weeks before, I have 5 spots set in my mind..

Anwar, Mario, Scott, Bo, and Nikko. I think for the other spot the Federov kid is probably the closest, since everyone loved Clay and he reminds so many people of Clay.

The women tonight, I'm still not sure on, with the exception of Carrie, and probably Vonzell, everyone else, I'm still not sure.

Funny you should mention that, because my GF and I were watching and somewhere during Constantine's doing of "Magic" she goes "at least they're doing more rock stuff this season" and I said "hey, it worked for Ashlee Simpson" and not 45 seconds later they show that commercial.

Her: "That's what you get for bringing it up. It's like saying 'Candyman' in front of a mirror"

Hey, but Lil' Oz's dad probably has a few greenbacks stashed away to help his son launch a singing career.

All in all, I can't say that I am surprised or upset about the last four eliminations. I would have rather seen Constantine get booted rather than Nikko, but I didn't care for Nikko much either.

I think the voting public did a pretty decent job getting down to twelve relatively good finalists.

I would have done a recap, but (a) I got home just as Vonzell was starting up in her cowgirl outfit, so I missed the first three contestants, and (b) when I got to work at 5:30 Wednesday morning, I thought I had an 11:00 am-ish flight to Denver that turned out to be leaving at 7:45 instead. D'oh! At least I was able to make it in time for the flight.

For the results show, I think the producers did an EXCELLENT job of building the suspense, and in retrospect Judd's sudden booting helped lead up to that, since you could never be too sure who was safe, even the ones who seemed like locks, like Carrie and Bo (although part of that is due to America's stupidity, as well). I really felt like I had no idea who was getting through from the two last groups of three.

I fear Linsdey will be ousted before Constantine, depending on what the theme is next week.
