The gist: Some kids, ages 13 to 16, killed another kid, age 14, and they claim they were using moves they learned from playing MORTAL KOMBAT. They then throw the dead body in a river hoping to hide what they had done.

I used to play video games back when I was 13 and I never got the urge to kill anyone when I was 13! This saddens and sickens me, both at the same time.

Why do I get the feeling this is just a cover story to get the kids a lesser sentence and free up the parents from taking responsibility for their actions.

Moves they learned in Mortal Kombat? Did they rip the other kid's head and spinal cord out, or did they freeze them solid and then shatter the body, or did they pull the skin off their own faces and burn them alive? Or did they just uppercut him so hard he got stuck in the spikes in the ceiling?

Talk about a bullshit cover story to attempt to get off, and it'll probably work and lead to another Lieberman-esque crackdown on the industry.

This was in Latvia, and they were drunk.

Somehow I doubt this will be the ember that sparks a reform movement.

Seriously. If Google is using us as reference material, we're only so far off from dictating the policies of state. Hell, didn't we already infulence the California Recall Campaign? WHAT HAVE WE BECOME?!

Ok... THAT was funny. But if you wanna know the REALLY sad thing... what were they doing playing Mortal Kombat? NO ONE plays Mortal Kombat anymore, right?

I'm assuming they had the kid with the deepest voice yelling the "FINISH HIIM!" part...shouldn't he be busted as an accessory?

I admit that I had urges when I was 13 to roll barrels down some steel girders to flatten some guy in overalls with a funny mustache...never acted on them though, but to deny them would be a lie.

In today's DC Post, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A18432-2005Mar8.html , the MD House is trying to restrict the sale of "violent" video games so it carries a fine of as much as $1,000 and six months in jail if a minor is sold a copy.

Why?

I thought they had establihed that Columbine was Marylin Manson's fault. I guess now that he has faded away they can use Columbine to attack someone else.

I thought the whole point of the ESRB Ratings was to find a way to regulate and restrict the sale of certain games to minors. Is it the retailers fault if parents are blissfully ignorant of what the ratings mean or what content is in the games?

Oh, Manson's still on the hit list, but Lieberman and his ilk were just as quick to point the finger at id Software's products. The phrase "murder simulator" rings a bell.

And now here's a REALLY strange bedfellow -- or maybe not:

(Hillary) Clinton assails ``epidemic'' of media sex and violence (NewsDay)

Highlight:
Clinton and fellow senators Sam Brownback, R-Kan., Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., and Rick Santorum, R-Penn., want the government to closely study the impact of media on the development of young children.

Um, THAT's an odd group to pal around with.

What interests me here is that she's never really been known to openly wave the "clean up America to PROTECT THE CHILDREN" banner from a blatantly religion-themed context, unlike Lieberman, Brownback, Santorum, Tipper Gore and the other PMRC wives, etc. Has Hillary experienced a spiritual awakening of sorts here, or is she just trying to drum up cheap political points?
