US- Thatís The Way (I Like It) - KC & The Sunshine Band

UK- D.I.V.O.R.C.E. - Billy Connolly

So my question is, I know Billy Connolly the actor (he was on Head of the Class after Howard Hesseman left), but is this the same guy?

And I hereby apologize to all for being born right when KC & the SB ruled the land.

Why yes it is! I actually heard this song on Dr. Demento years ago (over 10 years ago, actually - sheesh.). That was a hilarious song. He also did a great song about Wellington boots that I heard the original version of in my AP Euro History class later that year. Talk about distracting - trying to learn about the peasant class while humming a song about boots.

For the D.I.V.O.R.C.E. lyrics, Click Here (homepage.ntlworld.com) I'm pretty impressed too - that song was only #1 for one week.

As for myself - 1/20/75
"Please Mr. Postman" - The Carpenters (US)
"Everything I Own" - Ken Boothe (UK)
(edit - Hey Thrill, I've never heard of this song or artist either, yet here he was at or around the top song from at least January thru March. Crazy.)

That makes me feel old, considering that I owed the 45 of "I Love Rock n' Roll". You do know what a 45 is, right? Please say yes ...

For me:

US: "Fire" by the Ohio Players
UK: "Everything I Own" by Ken Boothe

Mayhem, of course I remember 45's. What makes me feel old is that the most of the first recordings I owned were 78's (like the Three Stooges, "Alphabet Song")

StaggerLee, I loved Rolf Harris "Two Little Boys" - don't knock it till you've heard it. Rolf Harris wrote a ton of great stuff, my favorite being "The Buffalo Song" which was played on the local radio for years.

Other than Wierd Al or maybe Cledus Judd, novelty artists don't get played anymore. Is Dr. Demento even on the air anywhere anymore?

On 11/21/77, the #1's were:

USA: You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone
UK: Name of the Game - ABBA

This makes me unhappy, as apparently I was born during the worst week of music EVER!

So just to try and make myself feel better:

10 yrs old:
USA: Mony Mony - Billy Idol
UK: China in Your Hand - T'Pau

The day I became a disaffected teenager, 11/21/90:
USA: Black Cat - Janet Jackson
UK: Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers (whoa!)

Sweet 16, 11/21/93:
USA AND UK: I'd Do Anything For Love - Meat Loaf (YES!)

Cuz I'm EIGHTEEN, 11/21/95:
USA: Exhale (Shoop Shoop) - Whitney Houston
UK: I Believe/Up on the Roof - Robson & Jerome

And lastly, 21st birthday, 11/21/98:
USA: One Week - Barenaked Ladies
UK: Believe - Cher

So what have we learned today? That listening to the radio on birthday will rarely lead to good music being heard.

1/10/73: "You're So Vain", by Carly Simon.

I read nothing into it, though.
