My apologies to the mods if this has been asked (but I searched the forum and couldn't find it).

Yesterday I almost purchased a "doo hickey" that says it can repair blemished DVDs. I was looking for something to clean smudged DVDs, so I did not purchase the item that would repair them. After I took it home and cleaned the DVD, I decided that I possibly should have purchased the thing that would repair blemishes, but I have one big question about them: Do they work? Have any of you had any success with repairing small scratches or other things that make DVDs pause, skip, and/or stutter? Is it worth $20 to buy one of those "doo hickeys"?

Thanks.

Can you replace your DVD for UNDER $20?

Good point, but in most cases the DVD in question is part of a larger box sets of TV series. It could be bad luck or the opposite side of the law of averages, but I haven't had a problem with any disks that cost less than $30. Plus the thing also doubles as a DVD cleaner, so it has other functionality, but I just don't know enough about the technology to be comfortable with buying a "repair" thing.

If you're talking about one of those "Game Doctor" type things that "buffs" the disc, the video store I used to work at had one.

It ruined every disc it touched, so we quit using it.

So, I've had just bad experiences with them.

My store has a big resurfacing machine that works pretty well. We charge $3 to resurface, buff, & polish a disc -- no guarantees, but it sure comes out looking pretty.

You should call around and see if any video stores in your area offer that service (you might try used game stores or used CD stores, too). It depends on how deep the scratch is and other stuff, but if the disc is trash anyway, it's worth $3 to try it.
