| #2 Posted on 16.2.05 2325.30 Reposted on: 16.2.12 2325.30 | Golden Rule BBQ is tremendous. There are a number of excellent BBQ joints in Birmingham, but Golden Rule is my favorite.
The Irondale location is the original, and it's the one you need to visit. Simply heaven.
Golden Rule BBQ--Irondale 2506 Crestwood Blvd. Irondale, AL 35210 205-956-2678 www.goldenrulebbq.com
We worked in town there for about a week and did a bbq tour of all the top joints.
The Best of the Rest:
Dreamland Bar-B-Que (just great ribs, and oh yeah, white bread--that's it) 1427 14th Avenue S Birmingham AL 35205-5416 205-933-2133 http://www.dreamlandbbq.com
Bob Sykes Barbeque 1724 9th Ave N Bessemer AL 35020-3418 205-426-1400 http://www.bobsykes.com
Jim N Nick's Barbeque - Five Points 1912 11th Ave South Birmingham AL 35205-2604 205-320-1060 http://www.birminghammenus.com/jimnnicks/newsite/newsite.html
Sixteenth Street Baptist Church 1530 Sixth Avenue North (205) 251-9402 Worship services Sundays at 11:00am.
The Sixteenth Street Baptist Church is the site of the infamous 1963 bombing that killed four little girls and brought racial violence and the pursuit of civil rights into crisp world wide focus. Visiting this church was incredibly intense and highly emotional, it's impossible to describe.

Which is exactly what I look for in a town. I loves me some BBQ ribs...my mission up here in Titletown is to find the city's best.

It's a lie! A god damned lie!!
Alright, so maybe I'm a little harsh, he's not too bad.
When you come in, I'd try and pick up either "The Birmingham Weekly" or "Black and White." Both are smaller local papers that have a good listing of events and points of interest in the city and they're free!
Some stuff off the top of my head for the tourist... - Vulcan and his gigantic metal ass! - Sloss Furnace - Alabama Civil Rights Museum - If they have anything at the Alabama Theater, it's pretty cool just to see the theater itself. - McWane Center's fun for the kids! (Plug!) - If you like music, The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame is in town. - Barber Motorsports Park is a kick ass road course and has a cool Motorcycle Musuem.
http://www.bcvb.org/thingstodo.html This is a pretty good list of attractions, places to eat, shop, outdoors stuff, golf courses, etc. Sadly, they don't rate the places to eat...
Enjoy your stay!
No, I do not work for the tourism bureau!

Tortugas Homemade Pizza 2801 Alabama 150 Galleria Trace Plaza Birmingham AL 35244
Of course maybe where you are from there are plenty of real pizza places, down here pretty much everything other than Tortuga is your chain of crappy pizza places like Dominos, Pizza Hut, etc.
Other than that there are plenty of malls on that site that L-Mo posted, golf courses too if that's your thing. You could also go see a UAB basketball game. Even if they aren't playing anybody you care about they are a pretty exciting team.
If you came last week you could've come to my graduation! Exciting! | DrewDewce

I loved it when his name was Fob. Of course, we had a Brereton at the time so who was I to judge?
Loved going to Tuscaloosa to visit my friend while he attended Univ of Alabama Law School. Also loved visiting the strip club that had to have been the inspiration for Porky's (Middle of the woods just south of nowhere and had to cross the little bridge over the crick to get to it). | Jaguar
