| #2 Posted on 10.2.05 0027.57 Reposted on: 10.2.12 0028.00 | Yeah, we were talking about this in the American Dad thread. Not "cancelled," per gay, but the Cock-Suckers cut the production order by 4 episodes. But if David just read about it on the internet, as he said, then he wouldn't know anything official yet. I'm guessing, and flailing despairingly, at this point, but I guess the season will just end abruptly with episode 18 at the end of April. As far as what that means for next season, I dare not speculate. I'm having a hard enough time dealing with them fucking up this season, which is devastating considering how all the episodes tie into each other and last year they all built towards the big finale. Now I guess they can't; awesome. I just want to puke all over their heads, sir. What a fun week Jason Bateman will have promoting the show on Conan and SNL.

We at FOX love Arrested Development and we look forward to having the Bluth family back on FOX in the future - hopefully for many years. You can help make the show a bigger success by getting as many people as possible to start watching the show this Sunday and every Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.
Sincerely, Fox Broadcasting Company
Bleh, we'll see. Nothing to do now but feel anxious for the next three months. And still no consolation for robbing me of 4 episodes. | PeterStork

| #12 Posted on 10.2.05 1922.17 Reposted on: 10.2.12 1922.47 | My biggest problem with Gail, the liar and coward, isn't her lack of support for the program as much as her inability to admit the network's lack of support.
The word at Fox's upfront last year was "we love Arrested and its continued existence was never in doubt!" Bullshit. This came after every show - literally - on Fox (save those already canceled months before, of course) was renewed in April with the exception of Tru Calling and Arrested Development. Gail waited until the upfront in mid-May to renew those two shows, as the network wanted to see if development was good enough to go a different direction. When the answer was "no," the shows were brought in off the bench. Nice support. If the plan was to renew Arrested all along, why not announce in April when you picked up all your other programs?
If you're going to dick around with your shows, have the balls to admit it. Peter Roth, now head of WB TV (the studio, not the network) and late of Fox Entertainment Group, was like that when he was in Gail's seat. He'd talk smack about the other networks (in 97, I believe, he did a joint presser with NBC to rag on CBS's poor 18-49 showing) and be very frank about Fox's programming. Now we have this shrew that gets promoted, gives an outright lie (referring to the network's HORRIBLE handling of Keen Eddie, she blamed it on predecessor Sandy Grushow and promised that new, critically acclaimed shows would get a chance to find an audience --- Wonderfalls proved that to be a lie) and drags Fox down to its worst. programming. ever. Meanwhile, ratings are down.
The question isn't if American Dad will score higher Nielsens than Arrested Development, but whether Nanny Reality Show #12 will score higher ratings than Arrested Development. If you want double Seth MacFarlane after The Simpsons, then fine, but what about 9:30/8:30 ct? What about weak spots on Thursday and Friday? Hell, put Arrested on Thursday opposite CSI and Apprentice if you want, but just keep it on SOMEWHERE. Unless it's the lowest rated show on the net, why does it go? Reality shows are, by and large, cheaper to produce, so lower ratings don't necessarily mean lower profitability, but add in DVD sales for your home video division and the positive press that comes from critics (not to mention keeping Tim Goodman from taking out a hit on Gail Berman) and shows like Arrested net you far more than simple ad dollars.

Though I admire the cleverness and weirdness, I still don't quite have a grasp on who is who and who is related to who (whom?) Is Jeffrey Tambor playing two characters or one character pretending to be someone else? If I can't get it, I'm not sure if the average casual viewer can. I hope it sticks around though. I think I'll try and get the Season 1 DVD and catch up. I think a cameo appearance by the hip-hop group Arrested Development would be funny, if they weren't too mad about the name and were actually still a group. | Quezzy

I guess it would be hard to figure that out if you just jumped in now, but usually the narrator does a good job of explaining past storylines so that new people can understand what is going on. | JustinShapiro

I'm in agreement with Peter, though; I wish the good shows would at least garner a bit more trust with the execs. Seinfeld's stride wasn't overnight. Look at House -- it's getting the AI rub, and it gets a great sampling... shouldn't AD get the same?
It is sad, though, that this is the network that canned Mickey Rooney's can on TV, but drek like "Who's Your Daddy?" gets promoed to high hell. | Freeway

FOX's February 6th ratings: SuperBowl XXXIX: 41.1 SuperBowl Post-Game: 25.5 The Simpsons: 13.0 American Dad: 8.8
And, for comparison's sake...previous Sundays in the 8pm-9pm timeslot [Neilsen ratings points included and rank among the networks and who they trailed behind] 1/30: Simpsons (5.7), Arrested Development (4.1) [3rd] 1/23: Simpsons (4.8), Arrested Development (3.4) [4th] 1/16: Simpsons (4.9), Arrested Development (3.4) [4th] 1/9: 24 premiere (9.0) 1/2: Movie (N/A)
More or less, Cold Case (on CBS) & Extreme Makeover Home Edition are KILLING Fox at the 8pm/9pm timeslot. Cold Case is doing 10s and EM is doing 9s, and NBC's American Dreams is doing better than FOX's offerings, too, although I can't find numbers to substantiate that.
The Simpsons got a HUGE ratings spike from the SuperBowl, but odds are it'll return to the 5.0 area this week and American Dad might end up doing Arrested-esque numbers anyways. Arrested is shedding about 30% of the Simpsons' audience. The preview of American Dad shed 33%, albeit with HUGE buzz and promotion beforehand...and a much later starting time than usual due to the SuperBowl. | JustinShapiro

I'd give them a mulligan on the 1/23 episode, as that was head to head with the AFC Championship Game on CBS, so anything would get murdered up against it. Personally, I like Arrested, but I think the sign that it was going to get put out to pasture was when FOX didn't use it as a post-Super Bowl show in order to potentially draw in new viewers, instead going with American Dad, which won't be on the air for 3 months, thus getting no sustainable momentum from its post-Super Bowl time slot. If the budget is right, maybe it goes to FX and they begin an HBO'esque rotation of Nip/Tuck, Arrested, Rescue Me and The Shield.
