Why yes it is George...somehow the rest of the first world has found ways to make sure its citizens can have a roof over their heads and see a doctor without having to work 3 jobs to support their mentally challenged children. From the transcript found at Drudge (drudgereport.com)

Last Friday when promoting social security reform with 'regular' citizens in Omaha, Nebraska, President Bush walked into an awkward unscripted moment in which he stated that carrying three jobs at a time is 'uniquely American.'

While talking with audience participants, the president met Mary Mornin, a woman in her late fifties who told the president she was a divorced mother of three, including a 'mentally challenged' son.

The President comforted Mornin on the security of social security stating that 'the promises made will be kept by the government.'

But without prompting Mornin began to elaborate on her life circumstances.

Begin transcript:

MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.

THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?

MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.

THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)

I know he meant well by it. But it makes me sad to know that the response to that sort of thing is to try and make it seem like somehow were a better country because people are in that situation.

I do believe that the point was to show that Americans actually do whatever is necessary for their families and for their own well being, as opposed to lying down and waiting for big brother to give them a handout....

You start working three jobs, then.

She shouldn't have to be working three jobs.

The problem I see with the conversation is this: Great -- she's working and not a welfare mother; point taken. However, what, then, do her children receive if she's not home to take care for them? There's always going to be cause and effect here.

You can have your opinion free per your own ideaology, but I have to disagree. "Uniquely American" shouldn't always be taken connotatively positive.

Why isn't her ex-husband giving her any money? Or why does she need 75K a year? Does she have a gambling problem?
What I am saying is that without a link to her specific story I don't know and neither does anyone else on this board know why she is working 3 jobs. All we know is that she is divorced, has 3 kids, and one of them is mentally challenged. Now if there is an issue that the govt. isn't helping her out with but should please list a link otherwise this is just super vague Bush bashing.

I must've have missed the part where she gave details about how they were all full-time jobs and that there was absolutely no doubt that she worked well over 40 hours per week. There isn't ANY context there, so how are we to know?

(I used to work with a lady *shudder* who said one time she was working five jobs. FIVE. Turns out she was counting five part-time jobs that added up to about one regular job with some (but not a lot of) overtime. Whoop-de-fricking-do.)

Actually for me it is more of system bashing and being disheartened by a rather pervasive mindset than specific Bush bashing. I would have been depressed no matter who said that line, Dem or GOP.

Fair enough but still specifics are needed to see where things need to be fixed.
