He thought he was getting amnesty for his raiders (kind of of a play on Quantrill's raiders), but the union guys just killed them and only Josey was left. After he killed 'em all (and let God sort 'em out), he sees fletcher and neither acknowledges the other. Vernon doesn't have a huge role in this film, but it's fair-sized and I think it's one of the top 10 or so westerns and he plays the role really well. That and Dean Wormer will always be Vernon for me.
