Wonder if the Rangers are gonna be as serious as they were with Delgado.......

I'd be more confident if his agent wasn't Boras.

But.. he'd be a great fit in Arlington, then the Rangers could trade Mr. Potato Head Mench for a couple of high minor league arms.......

It would be nice to think the Rangers are in on Ordonez, but I don't think they will pull the trigger on that one. With Boras as his agent, I think it makes it an even longer shot. I haven't seen anything in the last couple of days from Jamey Newberg suggesting this is close, though the Rangers might be getting better and holding their cards closer to the vest.

He'll end up with whomever will give him the most money, as he refused a 5 yr $14 mil yearly deal last year from the White Sox, just before he went and had his career-ending totally-recovered-from injury.

Don't worry that he won't work out for you. Scott Boras says he's healthy and ready to hit .600 this year with 800 HR. And if you can't trust Scott Boras, who can you trust? I know I go to Vienna all the time for experimental procedures...Maggs just likes the Old World charm of the place.

Just be patient and eventually the 'mystery team' that offered Boras client Millwood $75 million over 5 years will give Ordonez $100 million for 5 years. True, Ordonez will probably sign with a real team for $2.5 million for 1 year, but that 'mystery team' will be around next year for Boras to negotiate with.

This got me thinking about what Boras was saying when he was trying to get Beltran signed. This lead me to wonder who, overall, would be the better signing and who had the better seasons. Beltran, we can all agree is an incredible 5 tool player, who had one of the greatest post-seasons in baseball history. Boras was trying to get $200 million over 10 years for Beltran based in large part on that postseason. However, if you look at the stats, you could say Ordonez is the better of the two, and coming off a bad year last year, will not command the premium Beltran got ($119 million over 7 years).

What is the latest, that Detroit has offered Ordonez 5 years, $55 million? Peter Gammons says the Tigers are the front-runner.

And Buster Olney said on the (now horrible) ESPN: the Magazine radio show this morning that the Tigers are pretty desperate, and will pony up stupid money (Rockies/Hampton type money) to get Mags. Good for Boras, I guess.

I know it is a big IF, but IF Ordonez is indeed healthy, 5/$11 mil could be a bargain with the way 8 figure annual salaries are being doled out these days. In his last 5 full seasons (99-03), he has averaged 32/118/.312 with 187 hits and 40 doubles. Sure, he could pull a Belle or Mo Vaughn and not recover from the injury, but hell, its not like there is no upside here...

There is a big difference though between Ordonez and the Belle/Vaughn combination. There is ZERO chance that a team could get insurance on his knee, thus, if it doesn't recover from shock therapy, the team is on the hook for the full amount. The Mets actually made a slight profit off of Vaughn after insurance was factored in, and the Orioles did have insurance cover a chunk of Belle's contract.

Just a thought. What would be the consequences if he either signs with one of the Chi-town teams, or possible considers "semi" retirement (see Japan League of no stars).
