Saw both pictures this weekend...

Jessica Stein was a cute movie, but nothing earth shattering. Some reviews described is as "sitcom-y," which I agree with. It was almost like a Gen X sitcom, where the main female character experiments with being a lesbian. But by the end of the episode, she was back to being straight and chasing "the man right under her nose." In that way, I guess it's a Lesbian Bridget Jones. And no, before you ask, there's no nudity.

Grade: 7.5/10

Panic Room was decent, but a disappointment, given the talent involved (Foster, Fincher, Forest Whitaker). I liked the claustrophobic nature of the movie. Whitaker and Dwight Yoakum were good, as was the girl playing Jodie Foster's daughter. (I have to confess, in the commercials/trailers, I thought it was a boy).

Even with Fincher involved, I never thought we'd get anything but a predictable ending. I knew neither of the protagonists would die and I knew Whitaker, as the noble robber who doesn't want to kill, would end up either getting away with the booty or at least alive.

The best part of the movie was the snake-like camera that slithers all over the house, like the Spirit Force in the Evil Dead movies. It was almost a character in and of itself.

Not a waste of time, but waiting for DVD might be best.

Rating: 7/10

Jessica Stein was so bad it hurt my feelings. It dragged on and on, the main character superceded annoying (she made that broad from Sex in the city seem level headed and reasonable). The only redeemable character in the movie (her lover) never got proper development, and her "face turn" never really got a solid explanation. Oh, and the movie doesn't have an ending...the credits just abruptly pop up. Don't go see it.
Especially with any lesbians you might be dating.
*sigh*

I was annoyed at the abrupt ending, but it's not like everything wasn't laid out for you (her and the other chick are friends, she'll end up with the guy).

I still liked it better than Panic Room, because maybe my expectations were lower.

I would however recommend people rent Chasing Amy to see a better movie about a confused lesbian.

I totally agree about "Chasing Amy"

Joey Lauren Adams makes a wonderful confused lesbian.

And I love how at the end of Jay and Silent Bob, she's apparently with Trish the Dish.

Uh, 'Steps, I haven't seen the movie in a while, but I'm pretty sure that at the end of "Jay & Silent Bob" that Alyssa refers to Trish as "Sis" as they're leaving the theater.
Seeing as how they both share the last name Jones, I'm thinking they be siblings and nothing more.

And Joey Lauren Adams looked like she had just gone 5 with Tyson. Seriously, is she on the Matthew Perry Diet™ or something?
