I thought the Bucs' Michael Clayton would steal a couple votes after being the only playmaker on his team and putting up great rookie receving numbers (80 catches, 1193 yards, seven touchdowns). He had a lot of amazing catches this season and, aside from the won-loss rcord, I think his numbers are more impressive than Roethlisberger. | Mayhem

Actually, former Bills' QB Dennis Shaw won the Offensive ROTY in 1970, but being the first in 34 years is still really impressive.
He was their 2nd round pick that year. Their first round pick? Al "This is A.C., Dammit!" Cowlings. | TheBucsFan

From the ESPN article:
"The first quarterback to win the honor since its inception in 1957, Roethlisberger did so unanimously, the second straight rookie to get all the votes. "
you're right, though, Shaw won it in 1970 (Click Here (cbs.sportsline.com))
that's so wierd that ESPN would report it inaccurately. The only thing I can think of is that 1970 was, I believe, the AFL's last year in existence before the merger and ESPN is referring to NFL quarterbacks? That seems stupid if that is the case.
EDIT: Actually, that list on sportsline only goes back to 1967, while ESPN says the award has been in existence since 1957. This list: Click Here (sportsillustrated.cnn.com), which does go back to 1957, says the 1970 award went to Dallas RB Duane Thomas. Couple that with the fact that stories from the AP, the body that actually hands out the award, say no other QB has won the award, and I'd say Roethlisberger is the first QB to win it.

Regardless, though, Big Ben had a hell of a year. :)
