It's free to join, but if you want to email someone you have to buy stamps, a book of 6 sets you back $30 or so and you have to use them in 2 months. Bigger books cost less per stamp and you get longer to usee them. If I have stamps and send an email to someone they get to reply for free. It's not perfect, or even close, but I think that's better than paying for the membership. There are also a hell of a lot of profiles with "Try my name at somewhere warm" or similar in them, since you aren't allowed to put email addresses in the profiles.

Well, it's Friday... well, Saturday I suppose, but let me give a more detailed answer for you now.

OKCupid is fucking fantastic and it's free. If I can get a girl off there, keep her for eight months AND decide to marry her... how can it NOT be good. After my first marriage, I didn't think I'd EVER want to be married again, but thanks to www.okcupid.com I can honestly say I'm damn happy to have been wrong.

...what's the worst that can happen?

(Ofcourse, if she ends up taking me for half of everything like the first one... well, disregard this message please.)

Well, I can't argue with Cerebus' results, but I have had a different experience with OKCupid. I've had a few chats with women on the site that piqued my interest, and each time the line of talk ended with them simply stopping to reply. It's also not a good place for conservatives like me to peruse around on, for the place is really inundated with liberal believers.

I've been looking over the OKCupid stuff, and the women mostly seem to be about five years younger than me and the pickings in my area seem rather slim. Still, I'll be sticking it out.

I also seem to have the knack of sending messages to girls who apparently had decided to stop checking their account the day before. At least I know my luck is behaving as usual...

I think this is one of the first times I have ever agreed wtih Stagger.

My friend has met girls off of those things and only one of them was what I would constitute to be sane.

Another good way is to join a charity that you like. Generally, you and the girls there are gonna share the same interests. Also, it will give you something to talk about if the conversations during the date go stale and it gives you an idea how this girl will interact with people.

Also, if the girls there are all ugly, high chance that you are meeting the "grenade" and that she has good looking friends. And if you don't like anyone there, you can just quit being a volunteer.

I think there's an unfair stigma about online dating services. Like you're a complete loser if you use 'em, or everybody on there is a social misfit or escaped convict. Sure, I've met some whack jobs on there... but I've also met my share of whack jobs from the "real world". You're not swearing off the "real world" by using one. It's about as much time away from the "real world" as reading THE-W.COM! It's just another outlet, not the ONLY outlet. If you make it your only outlet, well then, yeah, that's gotta' suck. No heat with ya', but I don't think "real world" dating advice is what Eddie was looking for when he started this thread.

If you're around the Internet and your email, why not use those outlets to meet someone? It'd almost be like refusing to use your telephone to talk to someone. I found most of my jobs through online services, and even found my dog that way.

Some standup comic on Comedy Central:

I used to be not so big on the Internet. But these days, saying you're "Not big on the Internet" is the same thing as saying "I'm not so big on using the Telephone. When I want airline tickets, I write them a letter!"

I've met some nice people on that site - it's a good one to check out...but beware - there are ads everywhere requesting upgrading for other features.

Definately a good site to see though.

I don't see where I said anyone was a loser, I tried it once myself. Hey, if you have met some great people more power to you. A guy I know met a very, very nice girl through an internet dating service.

However,I tried to meet someone through this kinda thing and here is what happened....

One girl told me she was 5'4" and about 110 lbs, then the day before we are supposed to go out she says I have something to tell you. She goes on to tell me that she lied to me about her height & weight, her life and other things. These lies basically were honestly most of the things I liked about her. Well, I have talked to her for about a month before this, so she then tells me that she would like to still go out. So then I said umm okay, she then goes on to tell me that she is at a "healthy" weight. Well I get there, she is more like 5'2" and 150 lbs (She probably outweighs me by a good 10 lbs). Well, I go through with the date and never called her again. I get email bombs and IMs from her brother threatening me and calling me every word under the sun. Did I mention she also has 2 of her friends emailing me asking me why I wouldn't go out with her again and writing nasty notes to me? She then calls me and takes off that I am some sort of an asshole and that I completely ruined her for like (huh?).

I had a blind date do the same thing to met (that's why I refuse to do those too).

I totally agree that there are plenty of weirdoes no matter how you wanna date (believe me I have met my share), but at least I can kinda size the person up if I meet them in person first time. This at least gives me a fighting chance.
