Finding myself single again for the first time in a while, I was wondering if anyone would recommend any online dating sites. I've been considering eHarmony and Match.com, but I want to be sure this would be worth it before laying out any cash. Are they a waste of money, or is it possible to actually meet someone interesting on there?

I've dated via Lavalife. It's provided me varying results, but I'm currently seeing a nice girl I met from the site. You're going to find a lot of freaks no matter which site you pick, so be very specific in your profile of what you're looking for.

Keep in mind the business model of several matchmaking sites. Anyone can make a profile, but roughly 90% of the "users" aren't "members". In other words, if you pay for a subscription, a good portion of the people you send your messages to will not be able to read them. So basically, if you do send a message, you're being a salesman for them. Sort of an uphill battle, because on top of convincing someone to talk to you, you also have to convince them to instantly shell out 15-25 bucks.

I used eHarmony and Match in the past as a paying member. eHarmony came across as being rather intense and thorough, but in the end I didn't find their matches of a higher quality than Match.com. But I made a few connections/dates, and both made me feel somewhat special for a few days.

Match ties into "Online Speedmatching". Pretty neat interface, where you can actually (gasp) talk to people in live five minute segments. I used this feature back in August, but unfortunately the technology wasn't up to speed. I'd log in on time and after waiting for 15 minutes, I'd be informed that the session had been cancelled or that they were experiencing technical difficulties. I tried it for about two months...and talked to ONE live person in that time. Eventually gave up and felt ripped off. It's a cool concept, so I hope they improve it in the future.

AmericanSingles.com is neat in that you can see who has simply viewed you. It's available for non-paying, basic members. That's a slight cut above other sites where you can only see who's "winked" or "flirted" with you. You can also see the most active users.. which enables you to see who's actively "on the market" and logging into the site on a daily basis. -- Enables you to get your stalker practice BEFORE the relationship

Of course, it also helps if you're not an ugly bastard like yours truly.

EDIT: Also, it goes without saying, but be wary of the porn ads in messages. The picture and profile may be of a regular person, but it's really another porn scam (there was a big report on this about two years ago. A normal gal found her picture being used to hook people into porn scams via personal/romance sites). You may receive a "message" with nothing specific about you in it. Like "Hi, I'm new to the area and want to know more about you..." a standard response from a porn bot with instructions on how "she" really keeps her profile on a different site. Most of the sites are aware of these ads and do their best to eliminate them, but a few new ones sneak in under the radar. If you're a savvy interent user, these scams are pretty obvious.

If you wanna try the online dating thing and are hesitant to try out a pay site, go for OkCupid.com, I think Cerebus will back me up on this site I'm a little stupid as far as using the search function to find threads here, but there was a very long thread on this back in March of last year.

Within the first month or two of signing up, quite a few people on here found someone. I'm not sure about everyone else, but I think Cerebus has been with his girl for 8 months (i'm sure he'll chime in on this). I found a girl, but that fizzled out in less than 2 months. Weeks later I found another girl, a month of talking and dating later, we were "official". I cannot be any happier. she's the closest thing to perfect i've ever found, and today is actually our 5 month anniversary We both finally deleted our OkCupid accounts within the last couple of months, felt we really didn't need it anymore. The site seems to have a pretty good success rating judging by the results people here on Thw W got.

Plus it's got alot of fun and interesting quizzes to take, and thousands of questions you can answer. It's cool since the more of these questions you answer, the more your it "improves" your results. Plus, compared to alot of the other datings sites, they require you to answer a bunch of essays which may take hours to complete. You could probably have an account and profile with OkCupid up and running in half an hour or less, then update from there as you go along. The quizzes and questions are required to be answered, but they do give people a better insight on you.

Whichever you pick, good luck. And in this day and age, i've found out that online dating isn't such a bad thing, and it's a good way for everyone to find exactly what they want in a SO.

OKCupid.com is more of a test taking site, but I met a few cool people there. I think Cerebus's fiancee is from that site.

I found my current girl from alt.com, but YMMV.

I've tried plenty of those online dating sites and have been met with ZERO success. How do you people pull it off?

I tried OK Cupid, someone found me within a couple days of signing up. She said she was 19, going to college, blah blah blah. So we make plans and what not for dinner and a movie, that day, we were talking, I look on her AOL profile, come to find out she's 15.

With nightmares of my eventual 15 minutes of fame being nothing more then flyer's on my neighbor's refrigerators, I urge you to use caution.

Thanks for all the tips!

I think I'll take a closer look at Lavalife (since you guys get money, Guru) and American Singles (since I like that you can see who viewed you). I also need to revisit OKCupid again. I had forgotten about them.

Thanks!

One other thing to check out which won't cost anything is your local Craig's List (craigslist.org) site. I've known some people who had good luck posting there and it costs nothing.

I'd also give big props to OKCupid. Though I would also caution you about the women's age thing. I don't know how many times I've seen a profile that says under the "Private Thing I'm willing to admit here" something along the lines of "I'm really 16".

My God, spf, is this* you? I don't see this one as a real ringing endorsement.

Not to mock you personally, I was just working under the impression that Craig's List is largely for pee festishes and married men looking for gay sex.

I refuse to give an answer to that until Friday... that's when she's getting back home and I have to answer HER first, before anyone else, you know.

ANYWAYS, YES! OKCupid IS a good place to meet a decent woman that you might want to spend your life with...

Umm, yeah.

www.matchdoctor.com is the only free (i.e. no credit card, no fees unless you want 'featured listing,' etc) personals site I've found, and it worked for me (my girlfriend and I will have been together 2 years later this month.)

I hear Barnes and Noble is a good place to meet women.
I would personally stay away from ONLINE matchmaking services, too much time online and not enough time out in the 'real world' for my tastes.

But, I hear ittakes2.com is pretty good (from a friend who met his girlfriend there).

Ouch. That is just utterly harsh. Made me laugh my ass off actually. Esp. since I ain't been 5'7" or 165 since like 7th grade.

There are definitely a lot of posts on there that can be like that, but because it is not officially a "matchmaking site" but rather a giant set of various classifieds (I got 1st row ROH tickets on there once) you don't get as many scammers or underagers. And the freaky posts are usually easy enough to avoid.

I tried eharmony.com and I found out that apparently I'm a loser, because my personality is not one that they can find a match for. So I guess I'm doomed to spend the rest of my life alone, because I'm not good looking enough either.

That happened to me, too. Eharmony kept spamming me and I filled out a profile just for giggles (I'm a happily married man, Harvey). But I answered the stuff honestly and ended up getting some answer like "sorry, none of our 3 billion profiles are a match for your unique personality". That was unsettling. I began to worry if that was code for "you're a psycho".

But then I started getting bombarded with e-mails about how they'd found a potential soulmate for me, and most of the notifications were closely followed by nice little e-mails from the girls in question. So I started to think that perhaps I was, in fact, a playa. Then I realized that I couldn't reply to any of the e-mails because I was only on an Eharmony free trial thing. You gotta pay to play.

So I started to wonder if all those unrepliable soulmate e-mails might be a clever ruse to encourage me to sign up and pay. I never did find out. But if they were real, then Eharmony certainly seemed like a service that puts you in contact with a whole lot of people. If not, they're damned dirty liars.
