4/40. Little pricy, and it doesn't fill the gaping hole in the rotation, but what the hell. Last I had read (a couple hours ago, even), he was taking 4/32 to play for StL instead of 4/36 to play in Boston. The Mets robbed us, so I guess we're robbing St. Louis now.

Given that our best prospects are at SS, does this indicate a trade forthcoming? Who knows, who knows. Love that Hot Stove season, though.

You would think that this would indicate that Hanley Ramirez is heading elsewhere or will be moved to second base tout suite.

While I don't think Renteria is a terrific signing, it is still good. I think they would be wasting their money if they spend $40M on a pitcher like Carl Pavano. These guys are getting large coin because they are the best available talent. That doesn't make them great. I saw someplace (can't remember where, maybe Gammons or BP) who said assess whether you would trade someone on your roster for him. Just because they are free and available doesn't make them worth millions of dollars.

I don't understand this, everyone is totally ripping into the Mets for signing Pedro and Benson for so much money, when this is WAY too much for Renteria. He had 10 HR, 72 RBI and a .287 BA and suddenly he's worth 10 mil a year? Vladimir Guerrero is the best player in the league and he only made 11 mil last year, Renteria should get maybe half of that.

A lot of the love for Edgar rotates around his leadership. Screw the defense and clutch hitting; much of the media around here are keying on the loss of clubhouse leadership for the Cards after both Matheny and Edgar split for their respective coast. I'm not saying the BoSox didn't overpay, but this season wasn't a good example of what he can do, and he brings a lot more to the table than numbers.

As far as the Sox stealing from the Cards goes...well, I think that started back in October.

"Hey, remember that guy that couldn't hit the ball against us in the World Series? Let's get him!"

Ah well. Hopefully Jocketty does something this postseason, as we just seem to be letting guys go. I really don't want to see a Hector Luna-Bo Hart second base-shortstop combo.

I think Polanco's a possibility at second, given his history with the Birds and Tony's love of him. Neither Luna nor Hart impress me much, especially the latter, but the former Rule Fiver could platoon with someone else. It's more a defense thing; even with Matheny gone to the Land of Steroids, this club has more than enough offense.

Just no leadoff hitter.

Local news is saying he signed for $40mil for 4 years, turning down the Cards' offer of $39mil for 4 years. I really hope that doesn't turn out to be the case.

Yeah, but you have to look at what everyone else is getting. Tejada is making, what, $13m? Renteria is probably an $8-9m player, according to wiser men than I. Besides, Renteria is a two-time gold glover with a respectable bat. It is a small overpay, in terms of absolute value. But not in this market (if that explanation makes any sense).

Plus, I imagine we paid a premium of $1-2m/year to get him out of St. Louis.
