So does this mean that Edgerrin James will be playing for a new team next year? I don't know how much cap space Indy has, but after Manning's fat contract and now this, one has to believe that if the Colts had to make a choice between Marvin & Edge, they chose Marvin.

If they keep James, definitely not. Forget the comparisons to Dan Marino that Peyton Manning is now getting. With the Colts O and lack of D, Dan Fouts and the Chargers of the early 80's is the correct comparison. | BigVitoMark

Not that I'd want to pile on given Miami's current plight but:
"The structure of Harrison's contract will allow enough flexibility for the Colts to try to find a way to keep running back Edgerrin James. There is a $7 million roster bonus that can be converted into a signing bonus in order to lower Harrison's cap number in 2005 to around only $3.2 million." (Credit ESPN)
Even if he doesn't shift though, Alexander wouldn't be too shabby an alternative.

Didn;t Alexander come out an dsay he would play in Miami next year and then quickly retract it? I have a feeling that Seattle will either let Alexander go in order to sign Hassleback or work a sign and trade with the Dolphins. Either way, Edge stays in Indy, Alexander goes to Miami and Maurice Morris is your new Seahawk starting RB. | Sec19Row53

This isn't the NBA - sign and trades don't happen. There's no benefit to the team that trades for him, since they could just sign him outright as a free agent. If he's signed to a contract tender, the cost against the cap makes it impossible to absorb the hit. | Spaceman Spiff

Forget the cap space, Edgerrin has been the forgotten man during the Payton TD record march. Sure, he's getting yards, but he's not getting the TD's. He'll be the #3 guy on the team (behind Payton & Marvin), whereas he'll be the #1 guy in Miami. And that's not even factoring in that he'd be going home to play for the Dolphins. IMO, there's a 99.9% chance that Edgerrin is a Dolphin next year. | redsoxnation

IF the Colts use the Franchise tag on James, he can't go to Miami. He ends up with a 1 year deal for the average of the 5 highest salaries at his position. Usually, that will mean he holds out for 3 weeks of training camp looking for a long term deal before agreeing to the offer, but once he's franchised, he is off the free agent market. Now, if the Colts put the transition player tag on James, he could go to Miami. However, he would cost a 1 and a 3 pick, which means the Colts could either match the offer (which would be doubtful due to poison pills put in it by Miami) or get the #2 pick in the NFL Draft plus a high 3rd round pick. The Dolphins would have to be insane to give up that for a back who has had knee problems.

If the Fins don't get James I'd imagine Alexander would be pretty high up their list of alternatives. I've no idea how keen he is to move, but I had got the impression things weren't 100% rosey in Seattle for him. I can't remember for the life of me where I heard that though, so it may be complete twaddle.

| #13 Posted on 10.12.04 0723.46 Reposted on: 10.12.11 0726.42 | He answered a general "Don't you like to play in Miami, Mr. Free Agent-to-be?"-kind of question with an "I've ALWAYS liked playing in Miami"-kind of answer, which kind of turned into "Shaun Alexander's already packed and ready to be a Dolphin." He just became the first RB to rush for 15 TDs four straight seasons EVER, and while Holmgren may sometimes wish he had more of a "hit the hole and GO"-back (like Julius Jones, perhaps) the fact is that if you're question who is and isn't going to be here next year HOLMGREN seems most likely to leave, and since Trent Dilfer > Mo Morris there's already been a bit of speculation that HASSELBECK might be the one to go, not Shaun.
Of course, that was before #8 went for 414 on Monday night. Stupid pathetic defense. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
