I may be a click or two away from bringing the amount bought total up, but first, and I realize that this probably should go in the tech folder, but since I'm looking to possibly buy it off the link I'll ask here:

| #9 Posted on 9.12.04 1302.18 Reposted on: 9.12.11 1302.19 | Athlon = AMD. Celeron = Intel.
Intel has a few different processors right now - Pentium IV with HyperThreading, Pentium IV, Centrino (I think this is the mobile processor, not just the wireless deal) and Celeron.
AMD has the Opteron, Athlon64, AthlonXP, Sempron, and some mobile chip.
I'm overly simplifying things - Intel also has the Xeon processor line and Athlon has Geode - and there are other processors out there like the Transmeta Efficeon.
Which two products are you trying to choose between? I can probably better assist you in comparing them rather than trying to explain the whole sector in a post that wont bore you to tears
//edit: Also, if you can put down what your goals are with each (Photo processing, MP3 encoding, Games, etc) I can try to rate those areas based on what the specs are.

One thing about Centrino is that the chips are rated at lower speeds (1.4 GHz), but they claim they run as fast as a chip double it's speed (2.8 GHz). | JoshMann

Basically it was a couple of the HPs I saw advertised...keepng in mind that I will probably use the thing for far less capability needs than you (maybe the far extent of which is disc-burning) and that I'm not a PC gamer.
But I've kinda narrowed it to these two unless you have a better thought in the same range:

This just happens to be a thing that I'm not all that good at figuring out, and I'll admit it. Best I can figure so far is that I've been advised to stay far far away from the eMachines by a few people. Otherwise, I'm doing this similar to how I bought my car: ask questions of people who know more about cars/computers than I do.

| #12 Posted on 9.12.04 1313.09 Reposted on: 9.12.11 1313.19 | Here are a few links to go through. arstechnica.com does a series (God Box, Hot Rod, Budget Box) every few months to put a snapshot of what is the best value at the moment.
July Budget Box
September Budget Box
Looks like they are recommending the Athlon 2500+ as their processor of choice in each of these on the budget side. If you can tell what you are getting, the Barton core is better than the previous model, so I'd recommend that one.
Celerons are a good general purpose value, however - don't be swayed just by this. It really comes down to what you want to spend and what you want to do. The Athlon has better floating point operations than the Celeron - so on some distributed computing tasks it is much faster. Pentium IV chips with Hyperthreading are better on others. Within Folding@Home, it depends on the protein type (Gromacs vs Tinker), for example. It's hard to say which is better - I personally have been happy with the last two AMD based computers I've bought.
I think my next system will be an A64 3200+ if I don't give in and buy a super small Dell system. Right now, a quiet PC is my biggest concern - not really the power - so I'm willing to go with the PIV if I can get a really small system that is quiet (Dell SX270, for example). | JoshMann

| #14 Posted on 9.12.04 1322.29 Reposted on: 9.12.11 1323.48 | Between those two - if they were the only two choices - I'd go with the AMD system for $100 more for three reasons:
1) 80 GB HD instead of 40 2) 512 MB RAM instead of 256 3) DVD burner
You would be over $100 into the other machine if you wanted these other options at a later date.
The reason I would go with the bigger HD is because HP uses part of the drive as a system restore partition, if I remember correctly. I was looking at their Athlon64 line and the guy was telling me this. Basically, the plus side is that if you ever have to restore, the files are already there on a hidden partition so there shouldn't be a CD to lose.
The downside is that they will probably insist that you do this before getting any warranty repairs - so please make sure that you use that DVD burner to make backups.
I would be happier if it was a +/- RW for you so you would have the option, but HP is invested in the +RW style, so that's what they give out. DVD+RW is much better than DVD-RW, but DVD-R discs are generally cheaper than DVD+R. If you do get the system, I'd recommend spending the extra cash to buy the RW discs initially. I use a few to bring MP3 files from home to my laptop at work, and they work great.
You need the extra RAM because the system is using shared memory. With up to 64 megs out of 256, that doesn't leave a lot of room. Granted, EQ2 probably will not run on either of these systems without hardware upgrades - but it didn't sound like you wanted to do that anyway.
Finally, the 80 GB drive. You'll just be happier with this size, I think. You always need a bigger drive, some day. With the DVD burner, you will have a decent way to make backups from it as well (everyone puts off backing up their machine until it is too late).
If you have a few other machines you want to compare, post them up and I'll be glad to give you + / - on them from my perspective. | redsoxnation

To answer your question... I think so. But if you shop through amazon.com they don't charge sales tax.
