I feel dumb asking this, I should have asked years ago.

What is the difference between Record of the Year and Song of the Year? I used to think Record and Album were the same, but Yeah was not an album, I'm pretty sure.

Both are for individual songs, not albums.

Record = performer
Song = writer

I like to think I'm up to date on Country Music (it's pretty much the only thing I listen to), but I've NEVER heard of Tift Merritt.

Tift is not so much "country" in the modern radio sense. More of a neo-folk /pop/alt-country artist. If you are into No Depression stuff or Jeff Buckley or older Shawn Colvin, you would probably be more familiar with her.

I'm not exactly hip to the new music trends, so I apologize if this is pretty common knowledge, but: When the hell did Green Day become popular again? I thought the world had moved past them.

Looks like they're setting it up to be a big night for Alicia Keys...but who the hell knows with the Grammys.

Actually, between his death, the movie and the quality of the recordings, I'd be shocked if Ray Charles didn't win damn near everything.

When they recorded what is easily their best album ever and a very strong contender for Best Rock Album Of Whatever The Hell This Decade Is Called. Seriously. I've always been a fan, but I never thought they had an album as close to perfect as "American Idiot" in them.

I agree with OFB...the night might turn into a Ray Charles lovefest, with a few nods thrown Usher's way. If "The Reason" wins best song, I'm throwing something at my television. What's with all of the love for Kanye West? I didn't think he was THAT acclaimed. I'm pulling for Loretta Lynn to win the country album category.

"Van Lear Rose" should definitely win country album. And Kanye West put out one of the 2 or 3 best albums overall and definitely the best mainstream album of the year. Glad to see "Jesus Walks" up for Song of the year.

I don't get the Kanye West love either. This is a guy who I don't find likeable, is rather arrogant, and owes a lot to his record company affiliation, Roc-A-Fella. This is a guy who, upon losing "Best New Artist" at the AMA's, totally disrespected the winner, Gretchen Wilson by saying that he was robbed and was truly the Best of this year. Whether he was or wasn't, he's a jerk to say that. Basically, I like the things he's done as a producer, but I'm not totally crazy about him as an artist.

This was/is really Usher's year though. You couldn't escape 'Yeah', 'Burn' or 'Confessions'. Alicia Keys got 5 Grammy nods before so there's no need to overdo it again. Oh! And Kanye West produced her "You Don't Know My Name" single.

Funniest thing I've heard since the nominations were announced was Ashlee Simpson being upset because she was snubbed. It's Ashlee-Gate!

Weren't we all saying that about Johnny Cash? Didn't he only win one award that year?

I hope the Black-Eyes Peas and Maroon 5 win, if only because they're Izzy Jo's favorite bands and when in doubt, go with what the (almost) 2-year old likes.

HOWEVER, if Green Day and Velvet Revolver lose Rock Album of the Year to fucking Hoobastank, someone's gonna have some explaining to do, and I may skip the show altogether just to avoid seeing that happen.

I'm gonna go one better and say that if anything BUT Velvet Revolver wins Rock Album of the Year, there will be problems.

Wow...what a weak year in Country music. I hope Gretchen Wilson doesn't win it - her CD is nothing but a redneck worship album; and doesn't do much.

For the country album, it's gonna be Tim winning it.

Another question in the country genre-I've never heard of this song nominated for Country Song of the Year:

It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long
Rodney Crowell & Vince Gill, songwriters, The Notorious Cherry Bombs, performers

It's a great title.

The Kanye West love fest comes from the fact that he's a great producer. I admit that there is nothing special about him as an artist but his album was one of the best to come out this year and surprised a lot of people. This has nothing to do with the label he's on as he has been a recognizable name in the industry for few years because of his production work for Mos Def and Talib Kweli.

It's possible I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time that no song has been up for both Record and Song of the Year. "Here We Go Again" wouldn't be eligible for Song, since it's older (Ray first recorded it in 1963), but the others would be eligible for both. Interesting, and it shows that there's no real juggernaut.
